1. Naples, Italy

With its ancient roots in Mediterranean flatbread, pizza as we know it today is said to have been born in Naples, arguably the world’s best place for a pizza pilgrimage. Italy’s signature dish was originally invented as a meal for labourers: cheap, portable, and meant to be eaten at any time of day. Eating a Margherita al portafoglio (casual, street-style) in noisy markets or under laundry fluttering above narrow streets is a proper local custom. Sitting in a pizzeria by a sunny piazza, sipping a lovely Chianti from Tuscany and finishing with a gelato isn’t bad either.

Fly Tip: Naples offers plenty of pizza cooking classes where you can learn how classic ingredients, simplicity, and, paradoxically, a bit of imperfection in the dough make for the perfect pizzaiolo method.

2. Copenhagen, Denmark

Largely shaped by René Redzepi of Copenhagen’s Noma, aka the world’s best restaurant, “New Nordic” cuisine is a culinary movement that champions hyper-local ingredients, meticulous technique, and careful plating. Sounds familiar? Much of this philosophy reached a broader audience through the TV hit The Bear. Noma itself is a tough one to book, but perfect for milestone occasions. The restaurant helped put the city’s fine-dining scene on the map, offering a full experience, engaging scent, visuals, and even sound.

If that feels a bit highbrow, don’t worry. What makes Copenhagen interesting for foodie vacations is that the world-class fine-dining mindset spills into everyday food. You’ll find everything from pan-African restaurants to South American flavours and Asian delights, all reinterpreted through Nordic ingredients. Add to that the fact that the city is small and walkable, and you can easily explore it all.

3. San Sebastián, Spain

How do you pick a place for a foodie vacation? A high concentration of Michelin stars is a good start. The relatively small Basque city of San Sebastián has one of the world’s highest per capita densities. Much of this reputation comes from its famous pintxos culture: small bar snacks, often built around one ingredient. The tradition encourages bar-hopping, especially in Parte Vieja, the Old Town, where narrow cobblestone streets lead to the occasional historic marvel that reminds you to pause between bites.

Fly Tip: If there’s one specialty you absolutely shouldn’t miss, it is Basque cheesecake. Creamy. Rich. Caramelized on the outside. Simply irresistible.

4. Seoul, South Korea

Like K-pop and K-dramas, local food has become a major pillar of the Korean Wave. In Seoul, options like tteokbokki, Korean fried chicken, and gimbap are everywhere you look, and make perfect refuelling stops during city explorations, especially in markets packed with stalls like Gwangjang Market. You can even try a gamja dog, a hot dog on a stick rolled in French fries.

Visiting a Korean barbecue spot, where the main dish arrives with a small parade of side dishes, is highly recommended. A bibimbap restaurant is another must, where you mix colourful toppings right in a sizzling bowl at your table. In Seoul, cooking as you eat is simply part of the experience.

Fly Tip: Another fantastic experience for a South Korean foodie vacation? Try temple food. Restrained, sustainable, and plant- and fermented-based, this mindful cuisine is like wellness on a tray, rooted in millennia of Buddhist tradition.

5. Singapore

In Singapore, diversity is the whole point of the menu. This island city is home to an equally diverse population, predominantly Chinese, Indian, and Malay. You can imagine what that does to the culinary offerings in town. Local kopi and kaya toast for breakfast, a spicy laksa for lunch, and tandoori chicken for dinner? The order hardly matters; follow the aroma and the longest queue.

Make your first stop a hawker centre. These organized communal spaces bring together small cooks, many of whom once thrived as traditional street food vendors, serving their best dishes with impressive speed. Then book a table in one of the city’s sleek restaurants, where international cuisines shine, the food is extraordinary, and the bill rises to meet it.

6. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok was the world’s most visited city in 2025, and we have a feeling its legendary street food scene had something to do with it. After all, tourists and Bangkokians alike look for their daily comfort food at tiny, mobile restaurants that, like modern-day food trucks, come to you rather than the other way around. They serve everything from pad thai and pad krapow to papaya salad and the almighty mango sticky rice, gloriously bathed in coconut milk. The bustle of these stalls only adds to the delightfully chaotic cityscape.

If you want to escape the heat, many of the city’s air-conditioned shopping malls also offer great street food–style restaurants, some of them even Michelin-listed. And of course, you can always head to one of the city’s countless upscale eateries, many perched on rooftops above Bangkok’s glittering skyline.

7. Tokyo, Japan

From standing sushi bars to elaborate kaiseki tasting menus, Tokyo’s food scene will blow your mind. If San Sebastián boasts the highest concentration, Tokyo holds the crown for the world’s largest number of Michelin-starred restaurants. In the Japanese capital, chefs work with seasonal produce and exceptionally fresh seafood. The culinary precision appears from fine dining to everyday food.

Locals literally line up for what’s known as “B-class gourmet”: comforting, affordable dishes served in restaurants that focus on doing one thing and doing it extremely well. These vary from ramen and udon to gyoza, or even a perfectly swirled soft-serve ice cream. And if the late-night munchies strike, you can head to the yokocho alleys, the narrow streets glowing with red lanterns, where tiny bars and grills keep the city happily snacking.

Fly Tip: The sheer number of options can be a little overwhelming. That’s why Tokyo food tours are a favourite among foodie vacationers; they help uncover hidden gems beyond the usual tourist map.

8. Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City was dubbed the tastiest destination in North America, and it also made our list of the world’s greatest cities for foodie vacations. In the city, tradition meets modern creativity, and Mexican classics like tacos and enchiladas are reinterpreted in bold ways using global techniques, often plated with enough flair to rival chic eateries in Paris or London.

Still, there’s something for every budget in the Mexican capital. The experience can be just as satisfying at a street-side taco stall or in simple cantinas where people eat, drink, and socialize. Expect plenty of corn-based dishes and chilli sauces, many rooted in traditions that trace all the way to the Mayan and Aztec kitchens. Colourful markets like Mercado de San Juan are also well worth a foodie stop, the latter a spot where the city’s chefs shop and where you can wander in for a full meal yourself.

9. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans’ food scene results from a rare culinary fusion of French, Spanish, and Caribbean influences that developed into something entirely its own. In fact, not just one cuisine but two: Cajun and Creole. Cajun cooking comes from the countryside, and centres on hearty dishes simmered in big pots, like a good old jambalaya. Creole, meanwhile, is city-born and a touch more refined, with dishes such as seafood gumbo and beignets, those airy squares of fried dough that reflect the city’s old coffeehouse culture, especially in the French Quarter. 

A must-try in town is the po’boy, a sandwich said to have been created during a streetcar strike to feed the “poor boys” manning the picket lines. The real magic, locals insist, lies in the bread: crisp and flaky on the outside, soft inside.

10. Montreal, Quebec

When it comes to food, Montreal delivers quality at every price point, from award-winning chefs’ tables to mom-and-pop neighbourhood bakeries. Critics often say this is where Europe meets North America, with the tradition of French bistro cooking meeting the informality of the New World. Besides, the city may well have the strongest brunch culture on the continent.

Still, make no mistake, there’s also a strong sense of local terroir, found in beloved classics such as the bagels at Fairmount Bagel, the world-famous smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz’s Deli, and the Quebecois comfort food par excellence, poutine, fries topped with cheese curds and gravy. For more cosmopolitan tastes, head to Chinatown for authentic dim sum and fiery Szechuan noodles.

11. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Love a good steak? Buenos Aires is one of the world’s great steak cities. In the Argentine capital, steak is a ritual shaped by grass-fed beef from the Pampas, traditional wood-fire parrilla grilling, and distinctive Argentine cuts. The city also offers lighter fare, though. Traditions brought over by waves of European immigrants are still visible today in dishes like handmade pasta and arguably some of the best pizza you can have outside Italy. In Buenos Aires, cafe culture is as strong as in Paris. Locals take their time enjoying staples such as empanadas (savoury stuffed pastries), alfajores, and desserts filled with dulce de leche. We really can’t stress enough how good the latter are.

What about a wine tasting for pairing? Buenos Aires has fabulous wine bars pouring bottles from across the country, most sourced locally from Argentina. The country is home to some of the world’s most celebrated wineries and wine regions.

12. Bogotá, Colombia

Often overshadowed by cities like Lima, Bogotá is finally finding its momentum as a major foodie destination in South America. Until recently, many local chefs looked mainly to European flavours for inspiration, but a culinary revolution is now underway. A new generation of farm-to-table eateries is rethinking the concept, spotlighting ingredients long used by Indigenous communities and sourced from Colombia’s remarkably diverse ecosystems: the Amazon rainforest, the Andes mountains, and the Caribbean coast.

The best part is that this movement ripples far beyond the plate: restaurants support local farmers and communities while celebrating the country’s extraordinary biodiversity. Indulging in some of the best food in South America while doing a little good for the places you visit? That definitely calls for seconds.

1. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Set on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Prince Edward Island, or simply PEI, is one of Canada’s Maritime provinces. The capital, Charlottetown, is a small coastal city that balances creative energy with an easygoing island rhythm. The harbourfront boardwalk is a highlight and a picture-perfect Atlantic Canada photo spot, with lobster boats and sailboats resting side by side and nets drying in the sun. How to complete the Anne of Green Gables picture? Stay in a B&B infused with classic coastal allure.

After a slow morning, head out to explore the island’s pastoral scenery via cycling routes and coastal walks. When it’s time to refuel, expect some of the freshest seafood you’ll find anywhere along North America’s Atlantic coast.

2. Fredericton, New Brunswick

In New Brunswick, the riverfront town of Fredericton offers a seemingly endless expanse of trails tracing the banks of the broad, slow-moving Saint John River, known as the “Beautiful River.” The river makes for one of the best Atlantic Canada photo spots, and no matter when you visit: you will get some spectacular natural framing.

The experience extends well beyond the riverbanks to the Bay of Fundy, home to the world’s highest tides. You can kayak past fjord-like cliffs at low tide, then return hours later to watch everything reshaped by surging water. It feels like a whole other world! In town, evenings come alive with a lively mix of breweries, meaderies, and cideries.

3. Halifax, Nova Scotia

Besides being a top family-friendly destination in Canada, Halifax, the capital city of Nova Scotia, is also great for history buffs. As the last resting place of many who perished with the sinking of the Titanic, the city carries deep ties to the tragedy. There are places of reflection, including cemeteries and museums, that offer a deeper understanding of the events. Beyond the city, National Historic Site locations such as Port-Royal and Louisbourg place First Nations and European histories in dialogue, showing how different cultures shaped the same places over time.

4. St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

As the capital of Newfoundland & Labrador, St. John’s blends stunning coastal landscapes with millennia of history. Its location as one of the easternmost places in North America means you can enjoy one-of-a-kind ocean-based activities such as whale watching excursions and, in season, spot towering icebergs drifting past as part of the famous Iceberg Alley.

History also abounds here. St. John’s is one of the oldest cities on the continent, and the broader region reflects the enduring traditions of Inuit communities in Labrador. The sense of uniqueness deepens if you travel farther afield to Gros Morne National Park, where fjords, cliffs, and striking geological formations turn even the most casual snapshot into something wildly frame-worthy.

Fly tip: From St. John’s, a longer road trip takes you to L’Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only authenticated Viking settlement in North America.

5. Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Condé Nast Traveler once named Cape Breton the number-one island destination in the Americas. It’s easy to see why. You can hike coastal paths and forested highlands, especially in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Much of the park is accessible via the Cabot Trail, where mountain plateaus drop straight into the Atlantic, creating scenery that’s hard to beat — and easy to photograph! It’s impossible not to feel the rich sense of history here, rooted in Mi’kmaq culture, European settlement, and long traditions of harvesting natural resources from the sea.

Fun fact: Cape Breton’s beauty has long resonated with some of the brightest minds. Alexander Graham Bell once said, “For simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all.” And that was long before he figured out how to call anyone about it!

1. Be yourself!

In the digital age we live in, gorgeous images are everywhere. We love how easy it is to find inspiration for, well, everything, but while it can feel tempting to mimic your favourite Instagram influencer’s feed during your shoot, the best photos will happen when you are simply being yourself! If you feel tempted to find inspiration elsewhere, use it as a loose guide and make your own shining personalities the stars of the shoot.

2. Dress to feel good

A simple rule of thumb for what to wear? What makes you feel good will make you look good. And we’re not talking about donning sky-high heels if that isn’t normally your thing. Choose an outfit that you feel comfortable in (fits well, appropriate for the climate, etc.), but also one that makes you feel good (hello, instant confidence boost). If you feel good, you won’t have anything to worry about during your shoot — instead, you’ll simply enjoy the experience!

3. View the photo shoot as an experience

Gone are the days of stale department store photo shoots. Your Flytographer shoot is an experience. Think about it: you’re in an amazing location, probably on vacation with your own bad self or your loved ones — sounds pretty incredible to us! Look at your photo shoot as a vacation experience, something that’s not just about the end result (that amazing gallery you’re going to receive in a few days), but also about the memorable moments you’re having right now.

4. Choose a location that reflects you

You know what they say in real estate: location, location, location. The same goes for photo shoots. Choose a location that reflects you and your personality. If you are rarely caught with shoes on, opting for a beach location will put you in your element. And if your favourite vacation moments are discovering a new city’s hidden gems? Choosing a route discovering one of your destination’s hip neighbourhoods is probably a good fit.

5. Let the kids be kids

Planning a photo shoot with kids can feel like it’s extra stressful with so many what-ifs. What if the kids aren’t in a good mood? What if they’re tired or cranky or don’t vibe with the photographer? Try to time your photo shoot so the kids are well-rested and well-fed, and after that, relax! The kids are going to have a blast. They’ll run, they’ll play, they’ll get loved on by you, and we promise you will absolutely cherish these photos capturing your family exactly as you are.

6. Trust your photographer!

Here’s something you may not realize: your photographer has your back. We want you to feel amazing, to look amazing, and to love your photos long after the photo shoot is over. We will guide you. When you’re not sure what to do with your hands, we will totally help you. We will even tell you if you have lipstick on your teeth! We are seriously your #1 fan during your photo shoot, so trust us and relax knowing that we want you to look and feel incredible.

7. Treat yourself!

It can be hard to feel your absolute best when you’re away from home. We totally get the struggle to try to pack light only to be left wondering how you will possibly survive the week without your normal hair products. So, when it comes time for your photo shoot, don’t be afraid to treat yourself. Book a salon hair appointment so you can stop stressing over your frizzies. Get a manicure or a massage or both … do whatever makes you feel amazing and you will be raring to go!

8. Focus on each other, not the camera

We know it’s tempting to stare straight into the camera, but your photo shoot experience is about you and your relationships, so forget about the camera, relax, and view it as a time to enjoy each other (or yourself, if you’re flying solo). Don’t worry — we’ll capture that beautiful smile for your mom, but for the most part, you’ll look your best if you look like you are naturally interacting with and enjoying the people around you and the gorgeous destination you’re in. And the best way to look like you’re enjoying something is to actually enjoy it!

Kids Club

Four Seasons Hualalai’s fully supervised, complimentary KFAS program is available year-round for kids ages 5 to 12 and is a massive hit with travelling families. Seasonal programs with off-resort adventures and excursions are available for children ages 9 to 17. KFAS operates from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and offers swimming, arts and crafts, sports, and educational activities for kids, while parents enjoy Hualalai’s many experiences.

Apart from relaxing at the beach or numerous pools, guest activities include playing 18 holes on the championship Jack-Nicklaus-designed golf course, paddling a Hawaiian outrigger along the coast with the Alaka’i Nui water-sports team, soaking up a wellness treatment at the spa, working out at the outstanding indoor-outdoor fitness facility, or swinging a racket (or paddle) at the Hualalai Sports Club. Although the Big Island beaches, hiking trails, and volcanoes beckon, it is legitimately difficult to leave Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.

2. Mauna Lani Auberge Collection for Hawaiian History and Culture

Mauna Lani, located on the Kohala Coast, is about 25 minutes by car from KOA. Set on 34 oceanfront acres with almost a half-mile of coastline, as well as the ancient Kalahuipua’a site, Mauna Lani offers guests modern luxury along with an opportunity to learn about Hawaiian culture and glimpse Hawaii’s past.

Mauna Lani’s Hale ‘I’ike (“House of Knowledge”), the resort’s cultural center and museum, provides an immersive Hawaiian experience. Guests can make leis, listen to stories from local experts like Uncle Danny Akaka, and take a guided tour of the Kalahuipua’a site’s lava tubes, petroglyphs, and six major fishponds. The Kalahuipua’a Fishponds existed before the earliest contact, and Hawaiians used them to raise fish. This historic site is open to the public.

Insider tip: When you walk past the wooden grate system that separates the ponds from the ocean, take a look into the pond for tiny, vibrant yellow tangs, eels, and spotted puffer fish.

The six-story Mauna Lani hotel is designed around an open-air lobby, and guests can choose from a selection of rooms or suites, with 90% offering an ocean view. For an exclusive experience, stay in one of Mauna Lani’s two-bedroom residences with a gourmet kitchen and private outdoor pool.

In addition to three resort swimming pools – Resort, Adult, and the shallow Keiki “Sandy Bottom” kids’ pool, there is a swimmable cove fronting Mauna Lani. Kids Club

Holoholo Kids Crew, Mauna Lani’s complimentary kids club, is open to children ages 5 to 12, subject to availability, and reservations are required in advance. Activities with Holoholo Kids Crew focus on nature, adventure, art, and learning about Hawaiian culture.

While the kids are exploring Mauna Lani with new friends, parents can explore the extensive Mauna Lani Resort offerings, including 36 holes of championship golf at the Mauna Lani Golf Club, racquet sports at the nearby Tennis Garden, or treatments at Auberge Spa.

3. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Autograph Collection for the Best Beach Vacation

The first resort hotel on the island of Hawaii, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel by Marriott, is located on Kauna‘oa Bay, which is arguably the best beach on the Big Island. Located further up the Kohala Coast, the resort is about 30 minutes by car from KOA. The turquoise-coloured water, lava rock, ranchland, and expansive crescent-shaped beach inspired Laurance S. Rockefeller to build a hotel that blended with the natural surroundings. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel opened in 1965 and continues to host multiple generations of the original guests to stay at this iconic, family-friendly property.

Design

Designed to incorporate Hawaii’s natural environment, the mid-century modern structure lets ocean breezes flow through, providing cooling, and sunlight filters through the openings, bringing the outside in.

An extensive $200 million revitalization of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is nearing completion, with only the new Wellness Spa remaining and scheduled for completion by mid-2026. Guest rooms and suites in the multi-story Main Tower and lower-rise Beach Wing have been redesigned and enhanced as part of the revitalization.

The original circular pool has been refreshed, and a new adults-only infinity-edge lap pool has been constructed adjacent to a new fitness center. Both pools at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel overlook gorgeous Kauna‘oa Bay.

The Mauna Kea Beach Club fronts Kauna’oa Bay and is the place to go for towels and chairs on the beach, as well as beach gear, including snorkels, fins, SUPs, ocean kayaks, and bodyboards (boogie boards). The expansive white sand beach and rolling waves make it a popular place for families, including mine, to bodyboard. It is recommended that guests check with the Beach Safety Team before entering the Pacific Ocean. After sunset, it is possible to view manta rays from the shore at Manta Ray Point, where spotlights attract plankton, and the manta rays come in to feed.

Insider tip: Book a guest room in the Beach Wing for the easiest access to the beach and pools, with ground-floor rooms offering direct access to the lawn, on-site pools, and beach.

Kids Club

Mauna Kea Keiki Club Adventures is a daily, supervised program for children ages 5 to 12. Full and half-day rates are available, but reservations are required, and space is limited. Keiki Club Adventures includes swimming, shoreline explorations, sports, and art and cultural activities.

The beach is the main attraction at Mauna Kea Resort, but it’s not the only reason to visit. The welcoming, long-serving staff truly embody and practice aloha ‘aina – love of the land, the ocean, and the island’s people – which is why generations of families continue to return to Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The award-winning 18-hole Mauna Kea Golf Course is stunning and recently underwent a major renovation led by Robert Trent Jones Jr., son of the original golf course designer. 1. Rome, Italy

Rumour has it that Emily returns to Rome in the fifth season! You know what that means… It’s très likely that we may see another iconic Vespa scene in the romantic Eternal City. Agence Grateau is Sylvie’s new firm that Emily now works at, and of course, there is an office in Rome. Cue the curtain for Emily in Rome!

Our predictions for Rome filming spots:

• The Roman Forum and The Colosseum: We know that the Colosseum was a Season 4 filming location, and we suspect that Emily will be back to explore more of the surrounding area in the Roman Forum. We suspect Emily will find inspiration among the ancient ruins – perhaps scouting a location for a luxury brand campaign? After all, she did transform champagne marketing with a single Instagram post. The ruins are an iconic backdrop and have unique shadows in certain hours of the day when the sun is lower in the sky, making it a popular location for filming!
• Trevi Fountain: The Trevi Fountain scene was burned into our brains from Emily in Paris Season 4, and we think that she will be returning to make another wish in Season 5! We’re hoping for another show-stopping outfit moment – remember her pink tulle Molly Goddard dress at the ballet? Emily knows how to make a fountain her runway. The only question is what iconic outfit will she wear this time?
• Trastevere Neighbourhood: This trendy neighbourhood is also popular among foodies, which is why we think Emily will make a guest appearance in one of the many quaint restaurants and cafes. With Gabriel’s culinary expertise rubbing off on her, we wouldn’t be surprised if Emily discovers Rome’s food scene in this charming neighbourhood, maybe even inspiring a social media campaign for Marcello’s family business? It’s a hidden gem that we hope is featured in Season 5!

2. Venice, Italy

We are so excited about the prospect of a short stint in Venice in the 5th season! It’s such a classic backdrop in the history of film. Any city where both Indiana Jones and James Bond have made guest appearances seems fit for Emily Cooper. ‍

Our predictions for Venice filming spots:

• Piazza San Marco: Every storyline set in Venice should include at least one scene at the famous Piazza San Marco. This feels like the perfect setting for a Mindy Chen performance scene – imagine her singing against that stunning backdrop! The iconic architecture and wide open space make it the perfect location for an epic love scene or even just a casual walk and talk.
• Rialto Bridge: This unique bridge is such an iconic location in Venice, and given the love square drama, we’re betting on a pivotal conversation here – maybe where Emily finally makes a choice between Gabriel and Marcello? If she doesn’t go over the Rialto Bridge, it will be at least one bridge scene! Honourable mention goes to the Bridge of Sighs, which is rumoured to bring eternal love to lovers kissing underneath. The Bridge of Sighs legend feels very on-brand for this show’s romantic chaos.
• Gondola Ride through the Venetian Lagoon: We HAVE to see Emily Cooper in a gondola in Venice. Picture Emily in a gondola, wind in her hair, debating between her French roots and Italian future. The outfit? Probably something that breaks every ‘what to wear in Venice’ rule – and makes it work. Very Emily. The outfit possibilities on board a boat are simply endless, and we know Lily Collins is going to make it look so effortlessly chic.

3. Paris, France

We have been tracking Emily in Paris filming locations since Season 1, and one spot has always stayed constant – Emily’s office! Even though her first company, Savoir, suspended their operations in France, Sylvie’s new firm is in the same building, so we predict more scenes at the Place de Valois building in the 1st Arrondissement. As Emily famously declared, “I’m not here to blend into the tapestry of Paris—I’m here to weave my own vibrant thread.” Even with her Roman adventure, we predict that her fond Parisian memories will call her back to the City of Lights, starting with these familiar and new spots…

Our predictions for Paris filming spots:

• Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur: This neighbourhood is one of our favourites, and we are predicting that Emily will be making her way back here in the 5th season. Remember Emily’s first photoshoot with Antoine? Montmartre’s artistic vibe has always been her playground. We’re predicting a return here, maybe with Mindy for a best friend catch-up scene. It’s popular among artists and food-lovers alike, and there are new aesthetic backdrops and pastel coloured buildings around every turn. Très chic!
• River Seine: We’re thinking there is going to be a mirrored love scene along the Seine just like The Summer I Turned Pretty. The Seine has been witness to so many Emily moments – from her first croissant to awkward run-ins with exes. A romantic evening stroll feels like the perfect bookend to all that chaos. There is something positively dreamy about walking along the river in the evening with your love. The Eiffel Tower seems to glimmer just for you two.
• Le Marais: We also predict that Emily may move into a new neighbourhood in Season 5 when she gets back to Paris after living in Rome. We predict that she will move from the Latin Quarter (Place de l’Estrapade) to Le Marais because it’s a very fashionable, art-centric neighbourhood that we think suits Emily’s personality perfectly! Le Marais would be the perfect fresh start for Emily – trendy enough for her Instagram feed, artistic enough for her creative soul, and far enough from her old apartment to avoid running into Gabriel every morning.

Love a good soak? Look no further than Hungary’s capital, Budapest. At least 118 thermal springs run under the “City of Spas,” feeding a network of palatial spas, open courtyard pools and 16th-century Turkish baths. Budapest is certainly one of the best European cities to visit in winter, especially if you’re looking for warmth and relaxation amidst the chilly weather.

6. Helsinki, Finland

Reindeer rides, the Northern Lights and sky saunas

If you are craving a winter destination in the Arctic Circle, a Finnish holiday may be for you! First a bit of math: There are five million people in Finland and a purported three million saunas. Fins even have a sauna DAY where you can sauna with strangers/your new friends at their home. So after you go to a traditional Finnish sauna in Helsinki (one is in a Ferris wheel, another is in a Burger King), you can regain your strength by sampling a few of the local delights in old town: Karelian pies, Arctic cloudberries, salmon every which way, and even reindeer and bear in a can (sorry Yogi and all other famous bears). Winter is also the best time to visit the Finnish Lapland, where you can catch the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), see frozen waterfalls and go for a snowshoeing/dogsledding/reindeer sleigh day trip adventure.

7. Seville, Spain

Tapas bars, vino and t-shirt weather

Cold weather walks in scarves and mittens aren’t for everybody, that’s why Seville is a balmy addition to the list. The temp hits 18°C/64°F in February and just keeps on climbing from there. Seville is known for its beautiful architecture, so you should definitely get an eyeful of that (check out the Royal Alcazar of Seville, the Plaza de España and the Seville Cathedral for a start). Familiarize yourself with the city’s best share plates, a.k.a. Spanish tapas like chicharrones (slow-roasted pork belly) and anything in a deep-fried croquette. Sample a few and then hit the next spot, rubbing shoulders with locals and hydrating (with Spanish vino—hello, Garnacha, Rioja, Albariño) as you go. If you are itching for a European winter on the Mediterranean, Barcelona is also high on our Spanish off-season bucket list.

Surrounded by lush green mountains and only a 15-minute train ride from Kyoto Station lies the district of Arashiyama, one of the most picturesque places in Kyoto. The area has been a popular spot since ancient times because of its scenic natural beauty, making it ideal for Kyoto photos.

Arashiyama is home to several temples; Tenryuji Temple is the most famous of them, a serene and peaceful construction with an iconic wooden facade. Its garden, still in its original form, is a perfect example of a Japanese Zen garden: arranged rocks, moss, pruned trees, and flawlessly raked gravel looking like ripples of water.

One of Kyoto’s most popular attractions is a few minutes away, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. This seemingly magical bamboo forest has several pathways for visitors to explore. Notice how the tall bamboo stalks arch above you, forming a long green tunnel. It’s not all about the view, though; take a moment to close your eyes and listen to the swaying of the bamboo stalks when hit by the wind — this is one of the many famous soundscapes in the country. At the end of the bamboo grove, Kameyama-kōen Park offers more scenic views, and you can sometimes spot wild monkeys jumping around and picking fruits. 2. Higashiyama District

Photographer tip: “Our favourite location is the Higashiyama District. If you are a first-time visitor if you can get up early. I recommend a very early morning. I take photos here probably at 5:30 AM or 6:00 AM, just after the sunrise time. But this is quite nice to take photos with the old pagodas and traditional houses.” – Flytographers Coo and Yurika in Kyoto

The wonderful narrow lanes of Higashiyama, one of Kyoto’s many well-preserved historic districts, still echo the past. The several lined wooden cottages house everything from pottery and souvenir shops to teahouses, cafes, and restaurants. The lanes between the Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizudera Temple have a particular time travel effect, taking you to the time when the city was the imperial capital of Japan. This status lasted a thousand years.

In March, the ten-day-long Hanatoro Festival brightens the district’s streets and temples with countless paper lanterns. During this time, businesses and historical sites stay open late for people to enjoy the show of light and beauty and take jaw-dropping Kyoto pictures.

Higashiyama is also replete with Shinto and Zen temples. An outstanding example is the precious Ginkakuji Temple, also known as the Temple of the Silver Pavilion. Besides the pavilion, you’ll find traditional raked sand gardens and other smaller temples. Beautiful trees are all around, and there’s also a lovely pond. Curiously, the pavilion itself is not silver. One explanation for the name is that the moonlight reflected the lacquer-covered interior of the pavilion, which was actually black, giving it a silver-ish look.

While in Higashiyama, don’t miss the Yasaka Pagoda. This gorgeous 5-story Buddhist pagoda is the last remaining structure of an ancient 6th-century temple and is also the perfect background for iconic places to take photos in Kyoto.

3. Nanzenji Temple

As with everything related to Kyoto, the Nanzeji Temple in Higashiyama, one of Japan’s most important Zen temples, doesn’t lack beauty, history, or serenity. Just the imposing wooden entrance gate alone is already worth the visit. A photo on the stone steps of Sanmon, as it’s called, is an absolute must. You can also climb up to the gate’s balcony through ancient wooden steps for some stunning views and places to take photos in Kyoto. Beyond the gate, the grounds comprise several other minor temples and spectacular gardens. The main hall, Hojo, is famous for its minimalist interior and the sliding paper doors painted with delicate depictions that pay reverence to nature.

Curiously, an ancient Roman-style aqueduct passes through the temple grounds. It was built in the Meiji Period to transport water from Lake Biwa through Kyoto. As it’s still in operation, you can hear the flow of the water while admiring the structure.

4. Fushimi Inari Shrine

You’ve seen its photos. Fushimi Inari Taisha is probably the most internationally recognized symbol of Kyoto, thanks to the thousands of vermilion torii gates lined one after the other that form a network of trails leading up to the sacred Mount Inari. This highly photogenic spot is an important Shinto shrine built before the city became the imperial capital. The shrine’s entrance gate is called Romon Gate and it’s stunning: an explosion of vibrant reds juxtaposed with touches of emerald green and a dramatic roof. 

Yet, the truly breathtaking spectacle happens at the back of the shrine with the two parallel rows of red torii gates, thousands of them, marking the beginning of the hiking trail up to Mount Inari. You’ll be in awe with each step and have great photo opportunities. Notice the smaller shrines and the elegant fox statues along the way — foxes are believed to be divine messengers and are well revered.

On the hike, you’ll find cafes and restaurants where you can refresh and take a break. Halfway up, don’t miss the Yotsutsuji intersection, another spot with amazing views of Kyoto. Take your time to admire this unique city from above and capture it as one of the most scenic places to take photos in Kyoto.

5. Yasaka Shrine & Gion District

Geishas are quintessential to the Kyoto experience. In the Gion District, also known as the geisha district, you will spot many geishas and maikos (apprentice geishas) in exuberant kimonos crossing the wooden Tatsumi Bridge on their way to their meetings. Here’s something to remember: admire them from afar. Asking geishas for a picture is tempting, but they’re just getting on with their daily lives, and interrupting them is not polite. To take a closer look and perhaps take some pictures, visit the Gion Corner, a small theatre hosting geisha performances to the public.

The geisha district also offers upscale restaurants, sake bars, izakayas, art galleries, and shops selling antique artifacts, kimonos, and Japanese crafts. Walk along the Hanamikoji Dori to find it all in charming historic houses with exposed rolling blinds that add to their rustic yet elegant charm. Not far, Shirakawa Street carries even more historical vibes and scenic beauty. The street is lined with towering willow trees and fancy restaurants. Strolling along the district, you will also stumble across temples and shrines. The Kenninji Temple offers beautiful gardens, exuberant halls, and a lovely teahouse. Don’t miss Yasaka Shrine, also known as Gion Shrine. Trust us: Kyoto, Japan photos in front of its colourful entrance will do wonders on your Instagram feed! Next to the main hall, there’s a stage decorated with hundreds of lanterns, all lit in the evenings. The shrine is a popular spot for one of Japan’s largest Shinto festivals: the Gion Festival, celebrated every summer.

Here’s a curiosity: some of the smaller shrines are dedicated to making people beautiful and helping them to find love. Since you’re in the area, you might as well step in and say a brief prayer. You’ll find some good photo ops at the very least.

6. Maruyama Park

Maruyama Park, a mere stone’s throw away from Yakata Shrine, is a public area ideal for resting after a day of walking around and exploring the Higashiyama and Gion Districts. Stroll along its orchards and gardens and feel the tranquillity of the place. At the beginning of April, the quietness of this spot changes because locals and tourists flock here to watch spring’s biggest star: the cherry blossoms.

During the cherry blossom season, Maruyama Park is the most popular (and crowded) spot to admire the lovely sakura trees in full bloom. The park’s centrepiece is a giant and ornamental weeping cherry tree that forms a cascade of pink flowers in spring. During the night, the spotlight aimed at it makes it shine, and the sight becomes even more dreamlike.

Speaking of lights, in March, the place is also one of the stages for the Hanatoro Festival, when thousands of lanterns decorate the park. The cherry blossoms and the festival are wonderful experiences, but Maruyama Park is gorgeous all year round, making it one of the most stunning places to take photos in Kyoto.

7. Philosopher’s Path

Google Map Location: Tetsugaku No Michi, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, Japan

Photographer tip: “A temple called Hōnenin, which is in the Philosopher’s Path route on Flytographer, is my first go-to place. This place is very quiet, even in the daytime. I usually recommend seven in the morning. At this time, the bamboo forest is already very, very crowded. This place is very quiet, and there is still a Zen kind of feel here.” – Flytographers Masa and Asami in Kyoto

By now, you’ve probably noticed that, in Kyoto, serene places surrounded by nature and history are the norm. Still, none of them are alike; each of these places is special. That’s the case of the Philosopher’s Path: a pedestrian road lined by cherry trees following an irrigation canal that brings water from Lake Biwa into the city. This is another popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in spring.

Named after a famous Japanese philosopher, Nishida Kitaro, who frequently meditated along this road on his way to Kyoto University, the path links the Ginkakuji Temple and the Nanzenji neighbourhood. Along the way, you’ll also find a variety of charming cafes, restaurants, and lovely shops, not to mention small shrines and temples.

A delightful spot to stop by is Honen-in, a magnificent temple only a quick detour away from the scenic path. The entrance gate is exceptionally picturesque with its mossy roof, and the allure of this scenery increases with autumn when vibrant autumn leaves frame the temple making it look like something out of a painting. Philosopher’s Path is a must-stop for incredible places to take photos in Kyoto!

8. Kiyomizudera Temple Grounds

Google Map Location: Sagaogurayama Oguracho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8397, Japan

Without any doubt, the Kiyomizudera Temple is one of the most impressive temples in Japan. Built on the foothills of Mount Otowa, its remarkable structure is surrounded by lavishing nature and stunning vistas. You’ll instantly be mesmerized by the main hall’s wooden balcony: thirteen metres high, held by several wooden pillars. The star of the temple is the terrace, offering clear vistas of the surrounding forests and the City of Kyoto. This temple is a fine example of Japanese architectural brilliance, built and assembled using no nails but, believe it or not, still earth-quake resistant.

After the main hall, you’ll find Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of matchmaking and love. Hold your water, though. If you’re truly looking for love, you still need to pass a test. In front of the shrine lies two rocks eighteen metres apart. If you find your way from one to another with your eyes closed, legend has it you’ll find love. Are you up for the challenge? Going down to the temple’s base, you’ll see three fresh water streams providing fresh water from the Otowa waterfall. Each stream it’s said to bring various benefits: longevity, success at school, and, once more, good love life. Cups attached to a pole are provided for visitors to drink the water. Still, another catch: drinking water from all three streams is considered greedy.

There are many more fabulous places to take photos in Kyoto in this area in particular. The Koyasu Pagoda stands beautifully among the trees, and the Zuigudo Hall is a place dedicated to Buddha’s mother — entering its pitch-dark basement suggests you’re entering a mother’s womb.

9. Sannenzaka Slope & Ninenzaka

Google Map Location: 2-chōme-211 Kiyomizu, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0862, Japan

One of the best places to imagine what Kyoto must have looked like in the past is Sannenzaka, a cobblestone pedestrian street on a slope lined with historic Japanese-style wooden buildings. The stroll is usually combined with a visit to Ninenzaka, another slope, for more traditional architecture and stunning views of the five-storied Yasaka Pagoda in the background.

Very close to major tourist attractions, both streets are lined with typical hotels, shops and restaurants. They are also a popular spot to buy souvenirs, from green tea, sake, and melt-in-your-mouth sweets to Japanese patterned clothes, traditional accessories, and antiques. Lose yourself in the laneways and shops. You will see many people dressed in yukata and geisha attire. This area was the setting for some scenes in Rob Marshall’s Memoirs of A Geisha, which means it’s a cinematographic step back in time.

10. Kyonoyado Kagihei

In Kyoto, we recommend the Kyonoyado Kagihei, a small-scale hotel with only ten rooms and a public bath for guests to relax, all in a century-old building a stone’s throw away from major attractions. The rooms are, well, traditional. As part of the experience, you’ll be asked to leave your shoes at the door (as is standard in Japan), and you’ll be given a Yukata to wear during your stay.
