Katy's Travel Tips for Kyoto

What are the best places to eat and drink in Kyoto?

Menkui Kinya- great udon and tempura and the staff is super nice and accommodating (we came with 2 kids under 2 years old) Afternoon tea at the Ritz Carlton Kyoto- absolutely delicious food/drinks and beautiful setting! nokishita711 Gin and cocktail labo- most unique bar experience we've ever had! We came here in 2018 and 2019 and we still talk about this place! The owner is so passionate about his craft the and the drinks/atmosphere is amazing! We weren't able to stop back there this trip with the young kids but hope to visit again soon!

What are the best things to do in Kyoto?

Staying at the Ritz Carlton Kyoto- one of the most beautiful hotels we've ever stayed at- great location, gorgeous property, and amazing staff and service! Arashiyama Bamboo Forest- go early in the morning to avoid crowds Fushimi Inari Taisha shine Shopping in the Sanjo area Strolling the Higashiyama ward Eikan-do Temple- absolutely gorgeous with the fall leaves We've gone to Kyoto twice in mid-November and we feel this is the perfect time to go to Japan! Very comfortable temperatures and the fall leaves are breathtakingly gorgeous!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Kyoto?

Overall, we found Kyoto to be very kid-friendly! The kids really enjoyed all of the beautiful nature that Kyoto offers! We had been to Kyoto before without kids which was nice because we didn't feel like we had to pack in as many things this trip since we had seen a lot of the major sights in the past. Traveling with kids requires a bit slower pace because unexpected things can happen, but still very rewarding. We found it fairly easy to navigate around with our large stroller but there were a few shrines were we took our baby carriers instead of the stroller.

The city is so pretty during cherry blossom and autumn season so be sure to catch both in April and November. It's a must to wear kimono and walk on the old streets of Kyoto. Don't forget to try all the matcha flavour desserts which are amazing!!

Enjoy everything about Japan. You can't go wrong with any food in Japan even food from 711 convenience stores are delicious. Onsens are wonderful and relaxing after a long day of walking and explore Japan. Try everything once. But I know I will definitely be coming back time and time again to experience all that Japan has to offer.

We loved eating soba at Juugo. We recommend to wake up early to go to the popular shrines and temples to avoid the crowds and enjoy the peaceful serenity of Kyoto! If you can go during mid-November like we did, you will have mild weather and views of gorgeous colorful fall leaves!

Be prepared to walk, A LOT. If you buy new walking shoes, make sure you've broken into them before the trip. We easily walked over 25km in a day.

What is your best overall travel tip for Kyoto?

Be prepared ahead of time in terms of where your sights are located. You should be strategic in how you see the city by planning out specific neighborhoods and target a different one each day versus going all over the place

Must go see the monkeys at the Monkey Park just outside of Central Kyoto. It’s walking distance from the bamboo forest & only a quick train ride from Kyoto Station.

I would still see the recommended temples and places- but ask a local for their favorite restaurant. You might find yourselves like us in a traditional Japanese restaurant enjoying Sake with locals!

Fire Ramen! We wondered what the lineup was outside and when we saw the flames from inside, we had to check it out. They film the whole experience for you and even have a vegetarian option. If you want to travel outside of Kyoto, we recommend the JR Pass as it makes the train quicker and more accessible (we made it from Kyoto to Osaka in 15 minutes on the Bullet Train). Be mindful when you travel to Japan- we went during Golden Week and it was pretty busy (everywhere!)

Walking back from Ginkakuji temple, I randomly went into this café and it had this gorgeous interior garden and the café was set up so that everyone sat facing out looking at the garden. It was so unexpected, but so peaceful and beautiful. I thought it was an anomaly, but by Fushimi Inari, I found another café with terrace overlooking a pond and there were others along the river as well.

Don't stick to the main pedestrianised streets. Make sure to wander off small alleys and you'll find geishas and maikos on their way to practice, or secret gardens tucked behind beautiful ryokans.

Katherine's Travel Tips for Kyoto

What is your best overall travel tip for Kyoto?

I think it's hard to go wrong in Kyoto, as everywhere we visited was beautiful. Plan to start your days as early as possible to avoid the crowds at more popular locations. Having Kyoto's bamboo forest (mostly) to ourselves in the early morning was particularly magical. If you're spending some extended time in Kyoto, a day trip to Nara to hang out with the deer is highly recommended. And I can't stress enough the importance of comfortable walking shoes!
