After our photo shoot, Marta recommended a restaurant right near we were ended: Muro Venezia. It was excellent! The food was amazing and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. We loved eating in a neighborhood that was far way from the tourist bustle. We also had a nice stop in a little place for cicchetti and a Select Spritz one afternoon: Un Mondo Divino.

We loved our tour of Doge's Palace. Great for learning about the history of Venice. We also spent a lovely day at Lido, enjoying the beach.

Pack light. It's not easy to lug suitcases around.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Venice?

Eating at one of the restaurants in Piazza de San Marcos is a must as you have amazing views and dine while listening to live music. Food is excellent too.

What are the best things to do in Venice?

Visiting the Punta de Dolgana was great because there were less crowds and fabulous views of the area. Great eats and museums nearby too. Another must highlight is the gondola ride. They take cash only and if you want to have live music or guitarist playing, you need to reserve in advance. A walking tour of Venice was wonderful as we were able to explore the area and go at our own pace.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Venice?

There’s plenty of gelato and sweets to keep the kids happy. :)

Our family loved our excursion with Row Venice! What a fun way to see the beauty of Venice, learn about some of the history as well as present day Venice, all while learning to row! This really kept the kids engaged, but was great for the whole family.

Gam gam restaurant for great quality food at good prices and good portions, a menu with “something different” than the rest. Crepes by Pepe & Irene, only had once but super good and original.

We liked the doges palace, gondola ride, Punta Della Dogana, Basilica di San Marco, island of Murano, and the districts of Dorsoduro and Santa Croce. Anytime we went on the off beaten path, we liked it a lot.

Wake up early or stay late at night for the best pictures with few crowds. Midnight stroll has a certain charm to it unlike other cities we’ve been too. Not a lot is open at that time but the lights give it a magic feeling.

Marco Polo restaurant was recommended by one of our tour guides. We knew we'd found a local favorite when it was full of gondaleers eating lunch. The staff was pleasant and he food was fresh and packed with all the flavors of the sea.

Get lost- literally! We wandered off the main streets and stumbled across a park full of families and learned about the history of Venice's oldest Jewish ghetto. We met some amazing people and would never have had those experiences if we hadn't embraced getting lost in the city.

Yes! Don't book tours.. just go with the flow and give kids little snippets of information that they can imagine and remember. When we went inside the St Marks Basilica, I told my 6 year old son.. imagine you have a jar full of pennies.. how many pennies do you think it would take to make one of those mosaics? Also my son loved all the boats and it was interesting to point out the ambulance boat.. and the police boats!

Gio's Restaurant & Terrace was the location we went for lunch after our engagement and photoshoot. Beautiful and luxurious location with a terrace overlooking the grand canal. Marcianino l'Osteria was the restaurant we went to dinner that evening and had a wonderful time learning about the dishes from the Owner. Friendly and welcoming!

What are the best things to do in Venice?

We did not do any tours in Venice. Our favorite activities were walking the stress and canals looking in the local shops, bakeries, and cafes. With only 1.5/2 days in Venice, we wanted to be able to enjoy our time there freely and not be bogged down with locked-in 3 hour tours. We did not do a canal boat ride, mainly because they did not allow us to bring on champage to celebrate our engagement.

Campo Santo Stefano also a hidden gem for cafes, cappuccino and macchiatos. Quick, friendly service and an easy starting point to visit top sights like Rialto Bridge and Saint Mark's Square.

Get off the beaten path! We visited Dorsoduro during this trip, where we took our anniversary photos. Stunning views from the Ponte Dell'a Accademia. Quieter wine bars and restaurants and a more "local" feel. Don't miss the Mercato Di Rialto - fish market near Rialto Bridge. Also take a water taxi to the islands Murano, famous for glass blowing, and Burano, known for lace and the most beautiful colorful buildings.
