Yes! Don't book tours.. just go with the flow and give kids little snippets of information that they can imagine and remember. When we went inside the St Marks Basilica, I told my 6 year old son.. imagine you have a jar full of pennies.. how many pennies do you think it would take to make one of those mosaics? Also my son loved all the boats and it was interesting to point out the ambulance boat.. and the police boats!

Gio's Restaurant & Terrace was the location we went for lunch after our engagement and photoshoot. Beautiful and luxurious location with a terrace overlooking the grand canal. Marcianino l'Osteria was the restaurant we went to dinner that evening and had a wonderful time learning about the dishes from the Owner. Friendly and welcoming!

We did not do any tours in Venice. Our favorite activities were walking the stress and canals looking in the local shops, bakeries, and cafes. With only 1.5/2 days in Venice, we wanted to be able to enjoy our time there freely and not be bogged down with locked-in 3 hour tours. We did not do a canal boat ride, mainly because they did not allow us to bring on champage to celebrate our engagement.

Campo Santo Stefano also a hidden gem for cafes, cappuccino and macchiatos. Quick, friendly service and an easy starting point to visit top sights like Rialto Bridge and Saint Mark's Square.

Get off the beaten path! We visited Dorsoduro during this trip, where we took our anniversary photos. Stunning views from the Ponte Dell'a Accademia. Quieter wine bars and restaurants and a more "local" feel. Don't miss the Mercato Di Rialto - fish market near Rialto Bridge. Also take a water taxi to the islands Murano, famous for glass blowing, and Burano, known for lace and the most beautiful colorful buildings.

Yes make sure to include fun stuff after the kinda boring walking tours for the little ones. My eleven year old was not as impressed as we were with Dodges Palace and St. Marks Square, however she loved the gondola rides and the gelato at every corner. Search for the candy shops and give them breaks!

We can’t remember the name of the restaurant, but we walked toward the fish tail along the Grand Canal. Once the crowds went away, we found a street with many small restaurants. The food was good, and it was nice to get away from the crowds and enjoy the gorgeous scenery.

Doge’s Palace is a must! It is so beautiful inside. Even the teens liked crossing the bridge of sighs.

In the summer, plan many drink and gelato breaks. It gets very hot! My teens needed to sit in the air conditioned hotel for a couple of hours during the hottest time of the day, which allowed my husband and I to explore the city on our own.
