1. Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan, also known as Old Town, is the perfect destination for those looking to experience Stockholm’s history. Located on the island of Stadsholmen, this historic area is home to picturesque cobblestone streets, charming buildings, and beautiful town squares. The crown jewel of Gamla Stan is the Royal Palace, which sits majestically along the banks of Norrström and is one of Europe’s largest palaces. 🏰 Visitors can take a tour of the palace and witness the changing of the guard ceremony, a cultural experience not to be missed. 

Another must-see spot in Gamla Stan is Stortorget square, the oldest public square in the city. 2. Södermalm

Södermalm, fondly nicknamed “Söder” by locals, is a trendy neighbourhood located on the island of the same name in Stockholm. It’s been dubbed one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world! Known for its bohemian vibe, Södermalm is a haven for independent shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants, as well as art galleries and vintage shops. One of the most popular spots in Södermalm is the Hornstull Marknad, a street market that takes place every weekend. The market features a variety of vendors selling everything from vintage clothing to handmade crafts. It’s a fabulous place for souvenir shopping! đŸ›ïž

Another popular spot in Södermalm is the Slussen area, which offers some of the best views of the city. From Slussen, you can see the Stockholm skyline, Stockholm archipelago, and RiddarfjÀrden Bay. The Slussen area is also home to several lookout points such as the Katarinahissen, an iconic elevator that offers panoramic views from the top. With such great views, Slussen is easily one of the best places to take photos in Stockholm.

3. DjurgÄrden

DjurgĂ„rden is an island located in the heart of the city in the Östermalm district. Known for its natural beauty and attractions, it’s the perfect destination for visitors who are looking for a mix of outdoor activities and cultural experiences. 

DjurgĂ„rden is home to incredible museums, making it a must-visit location for history buffs. Visitors can explore the oldest open-air museum in the world, Skansen, which showcases the traditional way of life in Sweden, complete with characters in period costumes! Or tour the Vasa Museum, which is home to the 17th-century warship Vasa, the only preserved example of a ship of its kind. ⚓

For those seeking a bit of excitement, visit Gröna Lund amusement park, a family-friendly park with thrilling rides and fun entertainment. 4. MonteliusvÀgen

MonteliusvĂ€gen, also known as Montelius Promenade, is a lovely riverside path that stretches along Södermalm Island. With its peaceful atmosphere and incredible views, it is a great place for a stroll. One of the most popular spots on the promenade is the viewpoint located at the end, which offers a 360-degree view of Stockholm. From here, you can spot the surrounding islands, glittering river waters, and city skyline. This is a great place to take photos in Stockholm, especially at sunset. The city lights up in orange and pink hues while the river sparkles in the foreground—a truly picturesque scene! 🌅

MonteliusvĂ€gen has a variety of cafes and restaurants where visitors can enjoy a drink or a meal after a long day of exploring. This is the ideal destination to enjoy “fika,” the Swedish custom of enjoying a coffee and a treat with friends. đŸ„

5. Riddarholmen

Riddarholmen, also known as Knight’s Islet, is a small island located in the heart of Gamla Stan. Known for its beautiful architecture, Riddarholmen boasts a variety of historical buildings, including the Riddarholmskyrkan, a 13th-century church that is the final resting place of many Swedish monarchs. With its intricate brickwork, ornate columns, and gilded detailing, Riddarholmen Church is a spectacular sight and a great photo spot! 📾

On the western end of Riddarholmen, there is a walkway with a sweeping view of RiddarfjĂ€rden bay. This is one of the best places to take photos in Stockholm, as you have an uninterrupted view of the city centre, including the impressive Stockholm City Hall in the background. 😍

6. Stortorget

Stortorget is a vibrant city square located at the core of Stockholm’s Old Town. It is bordered by colourful, medieval buildings, making it one of the best photo spots in the city. The square is also home to several notable landmarks, including the Nobel Museum, the Stock Exchange Building, and the beloved Royal Palace. đŸ›ïž

Storkyrkan Cathedral, also known as the Great Church, is one of Stockholm’s most beloved landmarks and one of the oldest buildings in the city, dating back to the 13th century. 😼 With its towering spire and detailed façade, the cathedral instantly captures your attention. And the interior of the cathedral is equally impressive—think vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and detailed sculptures. It’s truly a sight to behold!

8. KungstrÀdgÄrden

KungstrĂ€dgĂ„rden—or the King’s Garden—is a beautiful public park located in the city centre. The park offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, with its lush greenery, picturesque gardens, and sparkling fountains. â›Č

One of the highlights of KungstrĂ€dgĂ„rden is the Cactus House, which is home to over 200 species of cacti and succulents. đŸŒ” But that’s not all! The park boasts a wide variety of botanical gardens, ranging from a traditional Swedish garden to a tranquil Japanese one.

9. Kungsholmen

For those looking to get a little off the beaten path, Kungsholmen is the place to be! Primarily a residential area, this delightful neighbourhood provides a great opportunity to mingle amongst the locals. Lively restaurants, cafes, and bars line the area, especially along the vibrant Hantverkarhgatan and Fleminggatan streets. Naturally, that means that this is a fabulous place to indulge in traditional Swedish dishes! 😋

Kungsholmen is also home to several parks, such as RĂ„lambshovsparken and Haga Park, which is home to the Haga Palace, the residence of the Swedish Royal Family.

10. Skansen

Skansen is a one-of-a-kind experience that immerses visitors in the history and culture of Sweden. Located on the island of DjurgĂ„rden in Stockholm, the open-air museum is a treasure trove of sights and activities, and it is the largest open-air museum in the world! With over 150 historical buildings from different parts of Sweden, such as houses, farms, and windmills, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. ⏳As you wander through the museum, you’ll be greeted by a visitor favourite: characters in costume who will share stories of Sweden’s past.
