Need another reason to be open to flexible travel plans? Check out this Honolulu beach proposal!

Though Paul knew he wanted to propose to his boyfriend Justin overseas, he wasn’t set on one location. Thanks to their openness, flexibility, and a well-timed flight sale, the two were packing their bags for gorgeous Honolulu. Keep reading for their intimate proposal story.

HOW THEY MET

“Justin and I met online about 18 months ago — how thoroughly modern! Our first date very nearly didn’t happen due to work-related commitments, etc. When those commitments suddenly fell through, I jumped at the chance of making our first date happen. Luckily, Justin was also free that night. I knew from the moment he walked around the corner that evening that he was the one for me and that this was going to be something special. Just how special? I could never have guessed.”

PROPOSAL LOCATION/DATE

“We’d actually been planning a vacation to Bangkok, but the night I went to book the flights, Qantas was having a flash sale to Honolulu. One quick call to Justin later and our holiday to Honolulu was booked. I realized that if I was going to make this proposal memorable, it had to happen in Honolulu. After researching locations with my shoot concierge and photographer, María and Trevor, we decided on the magical Makapu’u Lookout as it is both spectacular and reasonably private at that time of day.”

THE BIG DAY

“Given that both of our parents live near us and I planned to pop the question overseas, I knew that I wanted someone there to capture the moment. The question was, how would the vacation photographer get close enough while not giving away the surprise to Justin? This is where, together with Maria and Trevor, we agreed that to lure Justin to the beach proposal location, I would tell him that we had been offered a vacation photo shoot by our hotel. Trevor set the plan into motion by telling Justin he wanted to get individual shots looking out over the ocean. Meanwhile, I got into position to ask the big question. I love it when a plan comes together!” – Paul
