Looking for an unconventional trip to celebrate something special? These two spent their anniversary hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and crossed Lima off their bucket list. Read on for all the adventurous details.

“South America has always been on our bucket list! After hearing so much about Machu Picchu, we decided to pack our bags and visit this amazing Inca historic site. What better way to spend our anniversary than to hike the Inca Trail!

“Our favourite memory from our vacation was definitely hiking the Inca Trail. It was a 3-night, 4-day trek from the start of kilometer 82 all the way to Machu Picchu. The trek was challenging with a lots of ascents and descents. Our proudest moment was when we reached the top of Dead Woman’s Pass at 13,828 feet! We shared a lot of great memories on the trek and made a few friends along the way.

“My husband and I speak very little Spanish so we had to rely on our Google Translate app to communicate with locals. It was pretty funny because a simple question or conversation could take up to 5 minutes! It’s probably best to learn basic Spanish before visiting Peru!

“If you visit Lima, be sure to plan ahead! If you want to hike the Inca Trail, you’ll need to go with a reputable company (we went with Alpaca Expeditions and loved them!) to secure a permit. Also, be prepared with personal medication to tackle altitude sickness, upset stomach and other illnesses that may arise when travelling to a foreign country.

“Our favourite restaurant in Lima was Isolina, which is located in the Barranco District, the Bohemian area of the city. Food is served family style with generous portions. The ceviche and Osso Buco were excellent! Don’t forget the Pisco Sour, as well!

“We had a great time with Joanna from Flytographer. She captured the essence of what we wanted in our photo shoot in Lima! She made sure we were comfortable and provided guidance while keeping the shoot fun!” – Edna
