Why multigenerational travel is surging

Travelling and exploring as family units expands horizons and creates opportunities to make lifelong memories that can continue to be shared across and to future generations— a luxury past generations haven’t been as privy to. 🫶 Family travel is a unique space for bonding in a busy, transactional world.

With key drivers cited across major travel publications like CN Traveler, Travel & Leisure, AFAR, SKIFT, Skyscanner, Virtuoso, and Hilton, the reasons why multigenerational travel is surging are plentiful, but we’re going to point out just a handful:

  • Families prioritizing time together over things. There’s a reason most adults request time and photos over extravagant gifts— with age comes appreciation of time with those we love, and with busy schedules and growing families, that time can be hard to come by without prioritization; prioritization of family bonds is sure to be the best gift you can offer loved ones.
  • Grandparents funding or co-travelling on milestone trips. Grandparents frequently have the time, resources, and extra hands to not only finance trips or support planning, but also to help with grandkids, making time away feasible for families with young children.
  • Preference for destinations that offer multiple “speeds” (rest + activity). Another great benefit to travelling as a group is the flexibility for a variety of “speeds” when it comes to rest and activities, since not everyone has to do everything at the same time (or even at all)!
  • Growth of private villas, residences, and experiential travel. Travelling in a larger group can be quite cost-effective due to the sharing of accommodations, and oftentimes those stays include luxury accommodations outside of traditional hotel room blocks. With many people thinking outside the box in terms of accommodations, groups are offered more choices in terms of where to stay.

What makes a destination work for multigenerational travel?

Keep in mind destinations that work well in terms of walkability, healthcare access and infrastructure (often overlooked, but critical), activities that span all ages, strong villa or residence-style accommodations, and food, culture, or nature as shared experiences. 🛄 Some of our top destinations include:

1. Tuscany, Italy

Kicking off our faves strong with Tuscany! 🍷 Private villas allow everyone to stay together with space, and we love Tuscany for this reason. In terms of activities, Tuscany and Florence offer a variety of cooking classes, wine tastings, village walks, sightseeing, and day trips. Balancing quiet days with cultural exploration is easy in Tuscany, and we love that Tuscany works magically for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and other large-celebration-type trips!

2. The Hawaiian Islands

The Hawaiian Islands are familiar, safe, and easy for all ages. With easy-to-access beach days for kids, nature and culture for adults (national parks even!), we haven’t met a soul who wouldn’t vouch for a trip to Hawaii! 🌺 Another major pro for a trip to the Hawaiian Islands is minimal friction for Canadian and US travellers, including little to no paperwork and no language barriers. Beach resorts, family-friendly resort residences, villas, and all-inclusive resorts also simplify logistics for group travel. Maui and The Big Island are popular choices among families and larger groups!

3. Provence, France

With vibes and culture similar to Tuscany, we find Provence to be a bit quieter and less visited. 🇫🇷 With a slower, relaxing pace, we love the options in Provence for short drives, lovely strolls, and incredible food. Provence also offers incredible markets, historical villages, gorgeous vineyards, and of course, iconic lavender fields— beautiful and memorable travel experiences for sure! Provence also offers charming farmhouses and beautiful villas- ideal home bases for multigenerational travel.

4. Guanacaste, Costa Rica

A lesser-discussed location we love for multi-gen travel is Guanacaste, Costa Rica! Guanacaste offers easy family adventures (zip lining! Wildlife! Beaches!), stunning nature experiences that appeal across ages, and a strong villa inventory including great eco-lodge options. We also love that English is widely spoken in Costa Rica, and there are excellent guides to reference to make travel easy. 🇨🇷

5. Lake Como, Italy

Hey Italy, we’re back to you for a minute! We would be remiss not to include the iconic scenery and minimal physical demands offered by Lake Como. With elegant villas, lakeside strolls, and beautiful boat days, Lake Como is excellent for grandparents, young adults, and teens alike. 🚤 Also anyone who hopes for a solid celebrity sighting, er, celebrity vibes. 😉

6. British Columbia, Canada

Vancouver Island has so much to offer! 🇨🇦 Wildlife, scenic drives, and nature-forward activities with “mild” adventure, not requiring extreme travel plans for those hoping to keep things a bit more chill! British Columbia is perfect for visitors and extended families of all age groups.

7. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto is one of the most visually and culturally stunning locations in the world. Perfect for a large family vacation, Kyoto is fascinating for every generation! 🇯🇵 Kyoto is exceptionally clean and safe, and is maybe a place you’ve never thought of for multigenerational travel. One of our favourite reasons to suggest Kyoto is the opportunity to stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan—an experience in and of itself. Ryokans are Japanese inns that offer a cultural immersion, from the bed to the cuisine, to historic aesthetics and customs, sure to be an integral part of your shared memories. 🏯

8. Cape Town, South Africa

For a trip with milestone energy, we love Cape Town! 🇿🇦 Cape Town offers city life, food, and nature, ideal for large families to make memories that are sure to last a lifetime. We also love the idea of safari lodges designed with families in mind! For an outside-the-box trip of a lifetime, be sure to check out Cape Town.
