1. Le Morne Brabant

Mark Twain once said that Mauritius was created before heaven, with heaven being copied after Mauritius. Sound like an overstatement? 🤔 After visiting the Le Morne Brabant peninsula, you won’t think so. This UNESCO Heritage Site on the southwestern tip of the island is truly a piece of heaven, thanks to the majestic Le Morne Brabant mountain rising over 500 meters above the sea and the stunning blue lagoon that surrounds everything. Walking along the lagoon’s scenic shores allows you to experience an unusual phenomenon: the Mauritius underwater waterfall. This phenomenon creates an optical illusion, making it seem like there’s a waterfall flowing underneath the water. 😮 For a better view, hiking to the top of Le Morne Brabant is a great idea, providing panoramic views of the island.

Extra tip: For more unusual phenomena, head to Chamarel 7 Coloured Earth Geopark, where the sand is naturally coloured in layers of red, brown, violet, green, purple, blue, and yellow — a total visual feast! The park also features the famous Chamarel Waterfall and giant turtles. 🐢

Not far away, the Black River Gorges National Park is another must-visit spot with some great hiking trails.

2. Flic-en-Flac Beach

On the west coast of the island, Flic-en-Flac Beach is one of the longest and most beautiful stretches of sand, making it the perfect place to take photos in Mauritius or for just having some fun under the sun. ☀️ The vast shore of white and soft sand is great for beach walks and picnics under the shadows formed by the beautiful casuarina trees that line the coastline.

The waters are calm, like a blue lagoon where you can swim, snorkel, or kayak around wonderful coral reefs and exuberant sea life. 🐠 Views of the Morne Brabant Peninsula make the landscape even more photogenic. Hungry for more? Stay until sunset to be amazed by the spectacular show of warm colours painting the already gorgeous scenery. 🌅

Extra photo tip: Close to Flic-en-Flac, there’s another gorgeous beach: Tamarin Beach, a perfect spot to indulge in great water activities and take more memorable pictures. 👌

3. Grand Gaube Grounds

Picturesque and unspoiled, Grand Gaube is a fishing village on the northeast coast of Mauritius where you can still experience the old-world Mauritian charm. On every corner, you’ll find colonial influences and local folklore. Along the coast, Mauritius’ stunning natural beauty appears in the form of tiny rocky bays that make for great backdrops for photos. The best part? No big crowds walking into your frame. 😁 Grand Gaube is all about feeling the serene vibes of a sleepy fishing village, surrounding yourself with beautiful scenery, and immersing yourself in the island’s unique culture.

🔥 Hot tip: Another bucket list destination in Mauritius is Ile aux Cerfs, a tiny island home to more untouched beaches and wonderful lagoons with turquoise waters.

4. Cap Malheureux Church and Beach

Another charming Mauritian village is Cap Malheureux, and that’s where you’ll find one of Mauritius’ most photographed structures: the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel. ⛪ With its striking red roof set against the brilliant blue waters of the sea, the chapel creates an awe-inspiring scene — a picture capturing both the church and the azure backdrop is a total classic! 😉

The allure is enhanced by the pristine beach just a few steps away, an idyllic spot boasting rock pools, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking views of islets, such as Coin de Mire. A common sight is fishermen docking their boats, bringing in the day’s fresh catch from the sea. 🎣

Fly tip: Just a 20-minute drive from Cap Malheureux, you’ll find Château Labourdonnais, a French-style colonial house famous for being one of Mauritius’ most beautiful properties. Beyond its elegant architecture, visitors can also explore a distillery and beautiful orchards — the perfect shot? Two rows of gracefully bent trees create a picturesque frame around the mansion, highlighting the beauty of the fountain right in front of it. 😍

5. Gris Gris Beach

It’s almost indisputable that Gris Gris Beach is one of the most beautiful places to take photos in Mauritius, but its allure doesn’t rely on calm waters. Quite the opposite: From the top of dramatic cliffs, you’ll see big waves crashing against the rocks, and occasionally, you’ll feel the refreshing spray of water hitting your face. The scenery is distinctly different and will infuse a touch of drama into your pictures, making them worthy of an adventure photo album. To better capture the fierce waves, head to the viewpoint on the southern end of Gris-Gris, a magnificent spot for panoramic views of the rugged landscape with some delightful greenery, besides the vistas of the tumultuous sea. 🌊 You can go down to the beach and admire its unique beauty up close, but let’s stay safe; swimming is a no-no! 🙅‍♀️

While in the area, you can also check La Roche Qui Pleure, aka the Weeping Rock, a unique rock formation that resembles the face of a man and is easily accessible from Gris Gris. When the waves crash against it, they form an optical illusion that looks like a crying man. Mauritius is full of surprises, isn’t it? 😆

6. Bois des Amourettes Public Beach and Fishing Village

Lively local culture and a rich fishing heritage make Bois des Amourettes Public Beach not just a must-visit spot but also one of the best places to take photos in Mauritius. 🤳 This idyllic beach is perfect for both photography and relaxation, and you also get to explore the markets and streets, experiencing genuine Mauritian culture in the nearby fishing village.

If you feel like returning to the shores after some strolling around, Bois des Amourettes’ jetty offers a wonderful vantage point with uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean and nearby islands. 🏝️ From the jetty, the sight of Lion Mountain enhances the scenery, creating an even more beautiful backdrop for capturing Mauritius at its finest. 💛

7. Caudan Waterfront and Port Louis Market

Mauritius’s capital, Port Louis, offers a captivating blend of nature, culture, and entertainment. A highlight in the city is Le Caudan Waterfront, a commercial complex with boutiques, restaurants, cafés, and cultural venues. The shop-lined lanes are adorned with colourful umbrellas, creating a super Instagrammable backdrop. ☂️ For more shopping and photo ops, head to Port Louis Central Market and soak in the truly Mauritian atmosphere while marvelling at the variety of products on display, such as tropical fruits, spices, and local crafts.🍍🍌🍊

Hot tip: A short drive from Port Louis Market is Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, one of the oldest botanic gardens in the southern hemisphere. Their collection of exotic plants and their pond with giant water lilies are a total delight to the eyes. The scenic paths lined by palm trees are also great for some pics or just to soak in the peaceful atmosphere. 🌴 Another must-go spot near Port Louis is the Albion Lighthouse, which offers another Instagrammable backdrop with dramatic views of the ocean.

8. Belle Mare Beach

Belle Mare Beach is a true paradise boasting the most pristine natural beauty. Since the beach is protected by coral reefs, the transparent aquamarine waters are calm and perfect for snorkelling, paddle boarding, and swimming. 🏊‍♂️ The soft white sands are ideal for picnics or sunbathing, and the scenery becomes even more picturesque because of the imposing casuarina trees lining the shore. There are a few beach sellers around if you want to grab a bite. Sun, sea, and mild waves — what more can you ask for? 🤷‍♀️

Another great thing about visiting Belle Mare is that the beach is close to the city of Mahébourg, where you’ll find more bustling local markets to soak up the atmosphere of Mauritius. 👍
