3. Florence

One of the more colourful and exciting Easter celebrations takes places each year in Florence. The highly-anticipated Explosion of the Cart happens on Easter Sunday in Piazza del Duomo. The tradition is over 300 years old and begins with a pair of white oxen pulling the elaborate cart to its spot in front of the Duomo. During Easter Mass inside the cathedral, the Archbishop lights a dove-shaped rocket, which ignites the cart’s fireworks. If the “dove” makes its way back to the altar, it symbolizes a positive year ahead.
