Ryan & Deanna's Proposal Story in Florence

How did you meet?

Bumble

What is your love story?

Deanna and I met at the ripe old age of 27. With almost a decade of real-life experiences under our belts, we were not bashful about who we are or what we wanted. We had such a strong connection right away and almost 4 years later, that connection has only grown stronger! Deanna is the first person I've ever met who I am not afraid to be entirely myself with (no matter how goofy that may be). Even though she's the only person in the world more stubborn than me, I look forward to spending the rest of my life with her :p

What made you choose this proposal destination?

On our very first date, Deanna and I talked endlessly about how much we enjoyed our respective trips to Italy, our love for Italian wine and of course... pasta! As things got serious between us in the subsequent months, we joked about taking our first trip together to this place we'd both already been. Well, then COVID happened so our big travel plans got put on hold. Flash forward 3+ years and I knew there could only be one destination for this big moment... Deanna's favorite city in the world: Florence, Italy.

What is your proposal story?

My goal was to time the proposal perfectly with the sunset to get those glowing panoramic views of Florence. However, I was watching the weather for weeks leading up to this date and it was not looking promising! Apple said there was a 30% chance of rain and Google said it was going to be cloudy all day. When Ellie (the photographer) and I talked leading up to the big day, we devised 2 plans in case the weather wasn't cooperative... Well, luck was on our side!! As if just for us, the sky opened up beautifully in the afternoon of the big day! Once I was on-site at the San Miniato church, the nerves really started to kick in. A reassuring text from Ellie was just what I needed. With Deanna in tow, we took a quick lap around the grounds waiting for the perfect moment. Meanwhile, Ellie was chatting with the group of kids by the proposal location letting them know what was about to happen so she could arrange the perfect framing. We made it back to the proposal spot and took in the scenic view for a brief moment as I gathered my nerves. I took Deanna's hand and asked the big question... She said yes. I kissed her with every ounce of passion in my body when I hear a roar of cheers and applause! The group Ellie had convinced to move over had stuck around to watch the big moment. It was like a scene out of a movie!

Best tip for proposing in Florence

The overlook at the San Miniato Church is a phenomenal location to get engaged. The views are just as amazing as the Piazzale Michelangelo but it doesn't have nearly as many people around!

Derek & Katrina's Proposal Story in Florence

How did you meet?

Hinge

What is your love story?

Katrina and I matched on Hinge in the fall of 2017 in Chicago; I was from the area and had moved to the city the prior year, she was in her third year of med school and from SoCal. I think we matched on a Wednesday and it was immediately clear that she was different, one of those people you can’t stop texting and thinking about until you meet up with them. We bonded over a mutual love for Old Fashioneds, so we went out to Scofflaw that Saturday night, meeting at 10 PM with the knowledge that if the date wasn’t great we could at least get free cookies that the bar offered if we made it to midnight. Fortunately, things went well and we went hiking together the following week, then to the zoo, etc, etc. We conquered Chicago’s old fashion scene by hitting all of its staples, and by Christmas of that year I knew she was truly special. We endured various points of long distance due to our work lives over the next few years before finally moving in together full-time in Seattle by the end of 2019. We started our international adventures together in 2018, and our mutual love of travel and adventure has always guided us. It was only natural then that I would propose to her on one of these trips.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Katrina is a doctor, a surgery resident who has to give her time off requests for the upcoming medical year (July 1-June 30) far in advance. Initially we had planned to go to Italy in March of 2023 as a college graduation present for her youngest brother, and more of her family members, including him, where set to come on the trip. A few months beforehand his university offered him a free trip to Japan during that same week, something he couldn’t turn down. My focus immediately shifted to finding the perfect proposal spot with our given destinations and respective time frames in each part of Italy that we were visiting. I found the spot in January and did my due diligence looking elsewhere but kept coming back to the viewpoint at the Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte and the nearby walk to and subsequent viewpoints at the Piazzale Michelangelo were simply breathtaking and everything I knew she would want.

What is your proposal story?

We continued our drive through Tuscany the morning of, arriving in Florence a few hours before the photoshoot for the proposal was supposed to begin. I had told her all throughout the trip that I had booked a tour of the catacombs at the Abbazia and that we would be able to take some photos from the respective viewpoints if we arrived a little before this ‘tour’ began. We also had a reservation at La Loggia at the nearby Piazzale Michelangelo that we would be going to when it was done. I hadn’t been nervous at any point about the proposal itself, since I was asking my best friend to continue the amazing journey we’ve been on together. I didn’t realize how emotional I would be in the moment, however, as she immediately started crying, then laughing when that immediately caused me to do the same. Our brilliant photographer captured this beautifully and we were able to collect ourselves for an amazing photoshoot that commemorated one of the best days of our lives.

Best tip for proposing in Florence

The spots that I picked and the route that we took were fantastic, and I would highly recommend them. I researched many different sites in Florence and Italy throughout the path that we were taking (Napoli, Rome, Siena, Montepulciano, San Gusme, Orvieto, Cinque Terra) and the sweeping views of Florence and its Duomo proved to me that it was the spot. Ponte Veccio was always packed when we were there and it would be difficult to find a time when there wouldn’t be a whole lot of people around taking photos if you were planning on doing an engagement shoot there.

Jeremy & Shannon's Proposal Story in Florence

How did you meet?

Bumble

What is your love story?

I knew Shannon was the ONE right away. We had so much fun together every time we were together, it was like it was just us in the world.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

We had been planning a trip to Italy in May of 2020 and were incredibly excited about it, but had to cancel due to COVID. Our friends then planned their wedding two years later in Tuscany and we got finally got our trip back. We had always talked of Florence, and after two years of lockdown and going through so much together, it was the perfect place to propose.

What is your proposal story?

After a week in Italy with friends, we broke off on our own and took the train from Siena to Florence. The day we arrived, we immediately went to the Duomo and climbed to the top. From there, we settled into our beautiful AirBnb apartment and decided to have a "chill" night, going to see the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo. We were tired and it was HOT, but we made the climb up the hill. Shannon knew something was up when we went from the perfect look out down to a more discreet area to "take a selfie", when Ellie popped up and offered to take a picture with her camera. From there, I proposed and Ellie ran a wonderful engagement shoot. We then sat on the steps of the San Miniato church, watched the sunset, drank wine, ate cheese, and tried to FaceTime friends and family with spotty service. It was amazing.

San Miniato church is beautiful and the pictures are stunning! It is a busy spot particularly later in the day as sun sets, but in my opinion a perfect picture for a proposal.

Ephraim's Proposal Story in Florence

What is your love story?

I was a trainee at that time at Jessica's workplace and as it was my first day, I chose a desk and took a seat. Little did I know that that seat was her favourite desk in the office and so when she came in, she found me sitting there. During the day we got to know each other better and became friends rather than just work colleagues. The most thing that impressed me the most was her smile and how I made her laugh. One day I texted her asking her to meet up at a lounge by the sea and that was our first date. As we started meeting more frequently, I knew she was the one as we have a very similar character and we also support each other in all our hobbies, passions and careers.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

I chose this proposal destination as once a friend of ours mentioned that she went to Florence on a holiday and we saw some of the photos she took on her Instagram. We immediately fell in love with the scenery, the art and its rich history. As we also recently bought our first property together, we were a bit tight on finances to be able to travel and so I did my best to save up and surprise her with a vacation of a lifetime. As this place remained on our minds, it immediately popped up especially the location of San Miniato.

What is your proposal story?

Initially so as to for her to take leave from work, I told her that we were going to go for a week vacation in Gozo. As soon as I gave her the news that we were instead going to Florence, I mentioned that we were going to see a choir concert for the celebration of the 1000 years of history of San Miniato so that she would pack up a lovely dress for the occasion! As the day arrived we walked up to the place and passed by the photographer who was acting as a tourist. After around 5 minutes catching our breath after climbing all those stairs, I took Jessica as close to the photographer as possible and took a selfie. Immediately after taking a bad selfie on purpose, I told Jessica that we should ask someone to take the photo for us and so I asked the photographer who was close to us on purpose. He took a photo for us using my phone and then offered to take a professional photograph and send it to us by email after stating that he has a much better and professional camera than my phone. That done as soon as he said "This is beautiful" (the code phrase for me to propose), I turned away from Jessica as if I had just sneezed. As soon as I had my back facing her, I took out the ring and then turned and got down on my knees and asked her to marry me. She was not expecting for me to propose and she said "Ehe!!" which means Yes in Maltese. Every one near the chapel started clapping and some even took pictures. It was a memorable and breathtaking moment which we will surely remember throughout our lives. We then proceeded with a photoshoot as a reminder of that day.

Benjamin's Proposal Story in Florence

What is your love story?

My fiance and I met at a bar. We were both there with friends and suddenly my friend came up to me to tell me we were leaving. But I noticed my friend talk with a girl he had met so I stuck behind and was just hanging out on my own. I am 6'5 and can see over most of the bar and fiance is 5'7 so she is fairly tall as well. All night I had been making eye contact with her but was to afraid to go talk to her. Finally her roommate who she had know for only 2 weeks walks over to me introduces herself and the says this is Lettie and walks away. The bar was crowded and loud and I wouldn't hear her name. Finally after a minute of me still not understand she said "Lettie like in Fast and the Furious" I replied "ohh do you like to drive really fast cars?" she replied "no." At that point I figured I blew it but we talked the rest of the night and the rest is history.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Lettie studied abroad in Florence 7 years ago and hadn't been back since. Her favorite spot is Piazza Michelangelo. I knew proposing at that spot would mean the world to her.

What is your proposal story?

It was amazing. After hiking up to the Piazza I got us into position for the photographer. Lettie was shocked and couldn't have been happier.

Danny's Proposal Story in Florence

What is your love story?

We met at college. I knew she was the one when we started traveling and had the same thrill of going on adventures together.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Florence was both of our favorite city in the world separately. We had never been there together. So much beauty and creativity has come from FLorence that it was the perfect location to come together and propose.

What is your proposal story?

The proposal was perfect! We got to the top of the hill with the church in the background our photographer was there in perfect pretend tourist gear. I asked him to take a photo he pretended that he wanted to take a better photo and email to us. I got down on one knee and the rest is history!

Kimberly's Proposal Story in Florence

What is your love story?

We met about 5 years ago and became friends instantly. We were living in different states (me in DC and her in Boston) but we talked on the phone often and kept in very close contact. There was always some undeniable pull towards each other. A few years later (and many trips back and forth between DC and Boston) we started dating. And the rest is history. I found my best friend, my travel buddy, my roommate- it has been the most perfect adventure. I couldn't see myself making all of these amazing memories with anyone else.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

It was both our first times visiting Florence, Italy and I wanted to make it the most memorable trip. Florence is a picturesque and romantic city, I knew the proposal moment and all the photos would be beautiful.

What is your proposal story?

The proposal was perfect. The sunset and the view from the Piazzale Michelangelo/ San Miniato Church was absolutely breathtaking. It was a private location, which is what we wanted. I'm so glad the photographer (Emma) suggested it!

Ankur's Proposal Story in Florence

What is your love story?

We have known each other for almost two years and hit it off immediately. Both have an interest in filling up our passports and spending time with friends. Ankur knew she was the one when she first cooked. Raakhi knew he was the one when he liked her cooking.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

We were planning a trip to Italy for a friend’s surprise birthday. We have both been to Rome multiple times but neither of us had explored Florence. I thought it would be a good way to remember the city.

What is your proposal story?

Alberto did it all. He recommended the Piazzale Michelangelo and insisted on getting there before the crowds. Alberto acted like a tourist, offered to take our photo, then hid for the proposal. The lighting was perfect and it was exactly what I was hoping for.

Brandon's Proposal Story in Florence

What is your love story?

We met at a concert and immediately hit it off. She gave me her phone number but 1 digit off ('accidentally') but with a little bit of luck i managed to get in contact with her again. We went on a date the following week and the rest is history!

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Italy is her destination vacation and a proposal in Italy could not have been more perfect.

What is your proposal story?

After asking Alberto to take our picture under the guise of him being a tourist photographer, which she insisted photographers don't like taking cell phone pictures for people, i proposed overlooking the city of Florence at San Miniato Church. With a little bit of crying she agreed and said yes. Alberto did a great job of capturing the moment we had.

Kade's Proposal Story in Florence

What is your love story?

We met while in law school together in Houston, Texas in 2015, and started dating at the end of our second semester. We knew we were each other's soulmate when our dry humor and religious, political, moral, and societal views aligned without conflict - or when every little annoying thing became endearing!

What made you choose this proposal destination?

We were going to be traveling throughout France and Italy but after reading and hearing about Florence, nestled in the heart of Tuscany, I knew this would be the place that would steal our hearts. Florence had everything we could dream of, a beautiful landscape, small town feel, vibrant culture, and of course wonderful food.

What is your proposal story?

On March 8, 2018, Kade and Mikayla woke up to the clearest sunrise Florence, Italy had seen in days (It had been raining all week, which prompted Kade to move the proposal a day later than originally planned). Kade told Mikayla he had booked breakfast at the restaurant off the Piazzale Michelangelo - which overlooks the entire city, the Ponte Vecchio bridge, the Duomo, colorful rolling hills, and distant villages included - to commemorate their last day in their new favorite city before heading to Rome. He told Mikayla the only requirement was that they had to dress nice and wake up earlier than usual so as not to lose their reservation. (This had been a concern for their museum tours, and Kade knows how fashionably late Mikayla can be.) When the two got there, they walked around for a few minutes and made their way to the staircase Kade kept saying he wanted to see. There was a man hovering near the steps, but he looked friendly, so Mikayla asked him if he could take their photo with her phone. He then offered to take one with his camera and to send it to them via email. The two accepted, and the next thing Mikayla knew Kade was holding her hands and getting down on one knee! Kade booked Alberto Sarrantino to capture the entire moment and a photo shoot followed. It was absolutely perfect and their friends still talk about the photos. Mikayla says she should’ve known about the pending proposal when Kade wanted to take a selfie that morning (which NEVER happens and which he ended up sending to Alberto to let him know what they looked like); when Kade went back to the room because he forgot "something" but didn't provide details like he usually does (which felt skeptical but Mikayla did not question it); or when a simple Internet search would have shown that no such restaurant existed!
