Travel Story

In 2024, my husband and I decided it was time to explore Portugal—a country neither of us had visited before. We’d heard so much about its charm, and Lisbon became the obvious first stop. A friend of ours, now an expat living in Lisbon, gave us the perfect introduction to the city. With their guidance, we navigated the best miradouros (viewpoints) that offered breathtaking views of the city and the Tagus River. We spent six days soaking in Lisbon’s vibrant energy, from the stunning azulejos (tiles) decorating every corner to the soulful sounds of Fado spilling out of cozy tavernas. The warmth of the people made us feel right at home as we wandered through Alfama’s winding streets and discovered hidden gems in Bairro Alto. After our time in Lisbon, we set off to explore more of Portugal, spending another week discovering the country’s diverse landscapes and culture. The entire trip left us captivated—the tile art, the music, and especially the friendliness of everyone we met made Portugal unforgettable. We’re already dreaming of our next visit!

Travel Tips

When lunchtime rolls around, treat yourself to a Bifana—a classic Portuguese pork sandwich, usually served with a bit of mustard and a cold beer on the side. It’s simple, affordable, and absolutely delicious. You’ll find it at small, local spots across the city, and it's the perfect midday break after exploring. For dinner, make sure to start your meal with Caldo Verde, a comforting kale and potato soup that’s a staple in Portuguese cuisine. The Portuguese love their soups, and caldo verde is a must-try—it’s the perfect way to kick off an authentic Portuguese meal! Enjoy these traditional bites and you’ll be eating like a local. To end your day on a high note, head to one of Lisbon’s famous miradouros (viewpoints) for a breathtaking sunset. Whether it’s at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte or Miradouro de Santa Catarina, you’ll get sweeping views of the city bathed in golden light, with the Tagus River sparkling below. Bring a drink, relax, and soak in the beauty—there’s no better way to feel the magic of Lisbon.
