Mrs Macquarie's Chair

Opera house views | Sydney, Australia

Often called the best vantage point in Sydney, Mrs Macquarie's Chair is the spot every photographer in the city knows and loves, the place where the Opera House and Harbour Bridge appear side by side in one perfect, unobstructed frame. The "chair" itself is a sandstone bench carved into the rock in 1810 at the request of Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of the Governor of New South Wales, who loved to sit here and watch the harbour. More than two centuries later, the spot still delivers. Set within the lush Royal Botanic Garden, the path down to the point winds through beautiful gardens and native plants, giving the shoot a relaxed, green space before you arrive at the view. Early morning here, before the tour groups arrive and while the harbour light is still soft and golden, is one of the great Sydney experiences. Weekends and afternoons/evenings at this location are extremely crowded, so this route is strongly recommended for weekday mornings only.
