BRAD's Travel Tips for San Francisco

What are the best things to do in San Francisco?

If you think the famous Golden Gate Bridge looks great from the city, you should see it from just the other side in Marin County. All the best postcard views are just over the bridge itself from the Marin Headlands where you can get up close and personal with the bridge from heights as high as the bridge itself.

What are the best places to eat and drink in San Francisco?

We made an effort to really explore outside the usual city limits on this trip and found ourselves heading up more into Marin County where the famed Muir Woods are. Situated right off Highway One in that sweet spot where there are only the sort of gems hidden by lack of good cell signal, is Hog Island Oyster Co's outpost. Be sure to swing by for the freshest oysters and best seafood!

We are huge foodies so we loved exploring the Ferry Building. When our shoot plans changed because of weather, our photographer suggested the location change to the Ferry Building. And I’m so glad she did, it was one of our favorite places! Be sure to check it out!

You have to ride the cable car one way up and then back down! You see so much along the way, plus it’s a fun experience. The people driving the cars are talented and entertaining! We also loved Ghirardelli Square for its beautiful brick shops, restaurants, and free activities- oh, and the chocolate, too!

Most people look to Twin Peaks for views of the city, but with so many high vantage points, you can come across a great view almost anywhere. While Garrett and I were walking back to our Airbnb, we stumbled on Corona Heights Park and the fantastic view. We could even spot our nearby Airbnb from there which was fun to look for. The views from that vista were just incredible - expansive and unobstructive with a clear view to the towering buildings downtown. With less of a tourist reputation, the crowds were pretty sparse, and we even had the whole peak to ourselves for a while.

Did you know some museums offer evening hours and programs aimed just for adults? When the kids all go home for the day, museums like the Exploratorium and California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco occasionally hold later hours just for adults. I’m a total proponent of growing old, not up, and After Dark at the Exploratorium or Nightlife at the California Academy of Sciences is a perfect example of how to live that life. Just because we’re older doesn’t mean we can’t stop having fun or learning new things. Museums after dark are also ultimately the best, because they also open up a bar and you can wander exhibits with a beer, cocktail, or wine!

San Francisco is one of the best cities for foodies, and one of those destinations that can revolve completely around the what, where, and when of food. With so many options, it can easily get overwhelming! Focusing everything into one stop for food and drink though is the Ferry Building Marketplace. Sitting right on the bay with spectacular views of the water, the Ferry Building is heaven for foodies and houses a number of awesome restaurants and shops. There’s something for everybody here whether they’re a cheesehead, ice cream fanatic, chocoholic, or vino.
