Amy's Travel Tips for San Diego

What are the best places to eat and drink in San Diego?

We wanted to go to Poseidon in Del Mar, unfortunately we didn’t have time. Ate at the places we visited; the zoo, the safari park, the US Midway and Legoland. Dinner was done by mom and dad in the condo we stayed at😊

What are the best things to do in San Diego?

My kids loved the zoo and Legoland. I loved visiting the different beautiful beaches. My husband loved the US Midway.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to San Diego?

I felt mine were a bit old for Legoland, they still liked it. though! The Zoo is fun for all, the safari park and zoo are a half hour apart, we purchased 2 day pass and did 1 day at the zoo and 1 day at the safari park. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the gorgeous beaches, we went to Carlsbad, La Jolla, Sunset Cliffs and Coronado. All beautiful and kids loved exploring, found sea urchins and crabs on Carlsbad beach! For history buffs, like my husband, the US Midway is the place. Learn how they take off and land by retired Navy men. They have a tour, called the Island Tour, that is about the control center of the ship!

What is your best travel tip for San Diego?

We actually stayed in Oceanside, CA and loved it! Will definitely go back. We went to Disneyland and Temecula area for hot air ballooning and strawberry picking. My tip would be if you have the time, explore the surrounding towns of San Diego.

What are the best places to eat and drink in San Diego?

We loved Campfire, which is technically in Carlsbad. The service was wonderful, the food was delicious, the environment was cool, and the "campfire" theme oozed in so many fun elements.

What are the best things to do in San Diego?

We really enjoyed the museums we visited in Balboa Park, specifically the Science Center and the Air and Space Museum. There were so many interesting exhibits and our 2 year old really loved all the interactive activities that were available for him at both. There were so many museums in the park that I'd love to go back to visit.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to San Diego?

San Diego was a great city for kids, there was so much for us to do! Legoland was a little on the expensive side for our 2 year old, the rides were pretty limited for someone under 3' tall and under 3 years old, but he loved every second of being in the park.

What are the best places to eat and drink in San Diego?

So many good choices! After the proposal, we did Mister A's in Bankers Hill which has one of the most stunning views in town. However, you can't really go wrong in any of the beach towns (Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, etc) or downtown/Little Italy.

What are the best things to do in San Diego?

Beach/surfing in Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, or Encinitas; hiking the various trails, checking out the Torrey Pines Gliderport, getting dinner downtown in Little Italy, taking a boat out on Mission Bay - too many options to list!

Abel's Travel Tips for San Diego

What are the best places to eat and drink in San Diego?

If you’re into great Mexican food you can’t go wrong with Old Town Mexican Cafe in Old Town San Diego. Food and drinks are great and even the simple food staples are mouth delightful. Fresh corn and flour tortillas and great service. Don’t let a line out the door scare you away, you can be seated in as little as 20 minutes. Taco Tuesday has the best drink deals and it goes without saying things take a little longer but totally worth it… just order a few drinks and relax.

What are the best things to do in San Diego?

I’ve always avoided the San Diego Zoo because well, I’ve been to many zoos and what could be any different about this one… well I got to admit, I was wrong. This zoo is amazing and well laid out, it’s like walking into a different world in the middle of the city. Most of the zoo provides much needed shading in the hot San Diego heat. There seems to be a purpose for most of the animals there (“rescues”, etc). As is expected at most zoos… early or late in the day are best times to find most of the animals active.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to San Diego?

Kids love the ocean… if you don’t live by one it is worth finding a place near the water and within walking distance. Pacific Beach location offers a variety of lodging within any family’s budget, beach front to a 2 minute walk. With a grocery store situated in the middle of the stretch of beach (1/2 block from shore), you can keep food costs (& drinks) to a minimum if on a tight budget.

The San Diego Zoo if a must for all families who visit San Diego. We loved eating at Dukes's in La Jolla - kids love the Hula Pie. Carlsbad and their weekly farmers market is enjoyable for our family, too. While in Carlsbad pass up the every popular Pizza Port and walk around the corner to Roosevelt Pizza. It's a hidden gem!
