Don’t waste time standing in lines or doing organized tours. The best way to see the city is walking around, tasting the food, seeing the local culture and having a few drinks. Sure, the tourist attractions are great but, from our perspective, walk by, take a picture, then go have some Russian dumplings at a local spot. Also - pre-negotiate all taxi rides or use uber. We heard this tip in advance but made the mistake once and paid almost 3 times the price of an uber. Pre negotiate all rides.
Eat at White Rabbit! The restaurant is rated as one of the best in the world, and its location on the roof of one of Moscow's tall buildings is to die for — you can see the river and at least three of the stunning Stalinist skyscrapers. The food will definitely push your comfort zone, but in the best way. Trust the servers to point you to the best stuff on the menu.
Do not believe in stereotypes, Russia is very different from what the media portrays it to be. We have done summer here and winter, personally I think it is magical in the winters! Top tip though - brush up on your Russian language skills!
