What are the best places to eat and drink in Maui?

Waikiki brewery in Lahaina. Beautiful view of the water to watch the sunset. Food and staff are great! The Thai food truck in Hana. I’d do the whole road to Hana again just for that pad Thai. We also loved the bar at the pool, Umalu, at our resort. We stayed at the Hyatt resort in Kaanapali.

What are the best things to do in Maui?

Calypso snorkel tour. 10/10 would recommend. The crew was great and really knowledgeable. Snorkeling was so fun and we saw a bunch of sea turtles.

What is the best tip for going on your honeymoon to Maui?

Tell everyone it’s your honeymoon. People were really nice and sometimes got a shoutout. We had to cancel and reschedule this trip three times due to the pandemic. It made it extra special when we were reminded it was our honeymoon... even after a year and a half of waiting.

What are the best things to do in Maui?

Our snorkel and sunset sail with Gung Ho Sailing was the highlight of our vacation and they are photo lovers, too. The captain told us to relax and enjoy because they would be taking pictures during the sail so we didn't have to. Sunset at Haleakala was magical and hiking the Pipiwai Trail was the perfect alternative for families who want to see gorgeous waterfalls and a bamboo forest without doing the full Road to Hana.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Maui?

It was my first time in Maui (my husband’s 3rd), and our favorite restaurant was Honu in Lahaina. We didn’t expect to get a table right away because of all the people waiting outside the restaurant when we drove by it to find parking. However, they had a table for us outside with a beautiful view of the water and (later on) sunset. We were a party of 5 (2 adults, 2 kids, and an almost 2 yr old) and never did we feel we were in the way or not accommodated well. The food was delicious and the service was great! Bonus that the other couples/groups seated around us were amazed how well our kiddos behaved the entire meal (we were, too! because they’ve phased out any plastic utensils and glassware. Our kids were exhausted and hungry from swimming all day so even my husband and I were worried they may lose patience but they never did!) Everyone was really nice and professional from the hostess, our server, and the other employees around.

What are the best things to do in Maui?

We loved swimming at our resort’s massive pool and water park features. We also enjoyed being beachfront to Kaanapali Beach where the kids and my husband swam and snorkeled. We took a day trip to Hana with all our kiddos - it was beautiful! Along the way, we hung out at Baby Beach where we saw a live sea turtle just chilling on the beach before having yummy lunch at Surf Club in Paia. Then continued on the Road to Hana where we saw a menagerie of spectacular foliage and waterfalls before reaching Hana Farms. In between, we also took a tour of the lava caves. If I wasn’t pregnant and we didn’t have 3 young rugrats with us, we totally would’ve taken a hike on one of the trails and swam in one of the pools below a waterfall. The kids had a blast in the caves and learning fun facts about how it was formed. They also were excited to each have their own flashlights for the tour. At Hana Farms, we made sure to buy a couple of loaves of their famous banana bread - we bought the macadamia nut and the pineapple. We snacked on the former the entire ride back to our hotel and saved the pineapple one for our flight home. They were both so good. I don’t if we’ll do the drive again the next time we visit Maui, but it was worth it and recommend those who haven’t done it to at least do it once in their lifetime.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Maui?

Down the Hatch was an awesome place for breakfast and lunch! Their menu had a wide variety of delicious fare and the serving was generous! Our entire family loved it. When we ate there the first time, our service was great and there was a live performer. The restroom nearby was clean! My husband picked up breakfast from there a few times and we’d have left-overs for lunch that we ate poolside. And other guests would ask us from where we got our food. The one time we wanted to try it for dinner it was too packed. Lahaina Fish Co. was also a favorite of ours! We didn’t have a stove or oven in our hotel room but we did have all the other appliances, so we had to eat out for the most part and just heat up left-overs in the microwave. If where you’re staying offers a stove, then making some of your meals will save you a good deal and be more convenient for the family. We stayed at one of the hotels along the coast of Kaanapali. We quickly noticed that when going to dinner in Lahaina or anywhere popular really, it’s best to get to the restaurant or the area before or by 4:30pm, otherwise, good luck getting a table without at least a 40 min wait come 5pm! We happened to not have any problems (until later in the week) because being from CA, the time difference meant we felt hungry for dinner earlier. Later on in the week, as our kids somewhat adjusted to the time difference and wanted to stay in the pool longer or skip a nap, we ended up getting out of the hotel for dinner around the same time everybody else was going, and without calling ahead or making prior reservations, it was nearly impossible to get a table without at least an hour wait to places we really wanted to try, so we resorted to eating where we could get seated. Not all restaurants will have coloring paper and crayons for kids so I made sure I picked up a few that our hotel provided for free and that kept our kids entertained while we waited to be served and eat. Playing ”I Spy” also helped. As a last resort, we allowed our youngest to watch my phone. But service was never that slow at all the places we ate, except at Lahaina Pizza Co. While they were able to seat us on our last night (busy night) in Maui, our server just didn’t have any clue that getting food out to young kids who are clearly hungry and tired would’ve helped him and us! He’s lucky our kids didn’t throw any tantrum and they weren’t disruptive at all - that surprised us, too. Service took forever, especially because he kept prioritizing this senior group of guests next to us who were seated at the same time we were BUT took their time with the menu and had a lot of tweaks to their order because some of them were vegetarian, versus us who told our server immediately that we were ready to order as soon as we were seated (both groups had a 20 min wait before being seated, more than enough to look at the menu and decide what we wanted.) And although we still tipped 20%, I think that experience left us not wanting to ever try that restaurant again. Food wasn’t even that good - you pay for the view. Always bring napkins or baby wipes with you when you use a public restroom because sometimes the stalls don’t have any toilet paper or paper towel at all. This happened to us in Paia and at some rest stops on our way to Hana. Public restrooms in nicer touristy areas will most likely have those basics in their restrooms.

We had several adventures including Haleakala at sunset, paddle-boarding in the Pacific, whale watching from Lahaina, and a wonderful night at the Old Lahaina Luau. But my favorite adventure might have come from triumphantly climbing the Waihe'e Ridge Trail with my family.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Maui?

Let them try new things, respect the power of the ocean, and visit the less commercial areas. As for the best souvenirs, try CocoNene. Kids can create their own wooden longboard letter souvenir boards. They have fun doing it and walk away with a keepsake they won't outgrow.
