How did you meet?

We met at an annual small town Fair at the Thursday night dance!

What is your love story?

I knew right away. In a small town, you usually have an idea of who lives there, and who people are, but I hadn't a clue who Seleena was until the moment she made the move at the dance to say hi to me. She was amazing from day one. I could tell right away she had a big heart and cared about the important things in life.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

I had been to Po'Olenalena Beach back in 2019 for a family photo shoot. However, I didn't remember the lava rocks on the right side of the beach. Nicole recommended I propose amongst the rocks, and she was very right. It was a perfect spot.

What is your proposal story?

My "plan" for over a month was to meet my cousin on Po'Olenalena Beach at 4:30 on Thursday afternoon to celebrate her birthday with her. We didn't plan for a long visit, but just to say Happy Birthday and to see how her week was going in Maui thus far. After our visit, we were planning on going to Gather for a date night meal. This is what Seleena believed to be the "plan". And, earlier that Thursday, Seleena found an amazing outfit at Keliki at The Shops that she wore for the proposal and she looked absolutely amazing. The Proposal plan was similar to the "plan", with a few tweaks. We weren't meeting my cousin at all. We arrived at Po'Olenalen at 4:30, I spotted Nicole at the Lava Rocks. After concluding we couldn't see my cousin anywhere on the beach, I was able to convince Seleena to check out the lave rocks. We then took a Selfie to set the stage for the proposal. Quickly after the selfie, I noticed some sort of seashell stuck to some rocks and pointed them out to Seleena. While she was taking a closer look at the shells, I waved Nicole over to shoot us, and I backed up 5 steps and got down on one knee. She said yes! It was perfect!

Best tip for proposing in Maui

I was lucky and didn't have any snags. I bought a smaller ring box from Monarch Box, which made it really easy to hide the ring in my luggage. I'd suggest proposing an hour before sunset so you get a variety of sun in your pictures. Nicole was able to capture a variety of shots with the lighting.

What is your love story?

She simply makes my life better in every way. From the day we first met to even now, she has incredible energy about her, and brings everyone else up. The sweetest, kindest soul (nurse) that just took my breathe away. Very lucky to have captured her attention!

What made you choose this proposal destination?

We wanted to explore Maui for our next trip and had talked about the next step of our relationship. It seemed like a natural spot to figure it out with the stunning locations and memorable event combined with a vacation.

What is your proposal story?

Just told her we were going to Kihei for a nice dinner, but would check out some local beaches (hadn’t had a chance yet with other things we had scheduled so far). Ensured she was looking her best (as she would want) her nails and hair were done before the trip of course with some help from friends.. but worked it out with Rojeena, our photographer, to be ahead of us on the beach taking photos of scenery and when Cadence and I arrived she was ready. We walked along the beach and took photos and talked before I gave Rojeena the signal that I was going to ask. Took some photos of Cadence by herself with the backdrop of the ocean and told her we had to take a couple more since the first few were blurry.. when she turned back around I had dropped to one knee. The rest is history 🥰

Best tip for proposing in Maui

Just have fun with it. The beaches are incredible, we didn’t have a ton of people around and those who were cheered after. Just enjoy the moment and really focus on your partner. The moment will be special no matter what.

What is your love story?

I knew she was the one when she met my family. I had never introduced anyone to my family before

What made you choose this proposal destination?

She loves Maui and we cannot have our wedding there so I decided to propose in Lahaina at the “baby beach.” We have a baby in the oven and a son so my plan is to one day bring them all back to take family portraits there since the beach is also well known for family shoots.

What is your proposal story?

I tricked her into thinking we were going somewhere fancy for breakfast and that I wanted to walk the baby beach beforehand. Little did she know..I had a photographer there waiting to take pics of my proposal.

What is your love story?

Dedy and I have been together for over a decade now. We met through a mutual friend. The 3 of us were all neighbors, funnily enough! Dedy has been my greatest supporter and best friend for a long time, so it was evident she was “the one” pretty early on!

What made you choose this proposal destination?

I heard Maui had a reputation for being a very relaxing and romantic location for a getaway. It seemed like the perfect place to pop the question.

What is your proposal story?

While I planned the shoot in advance with our photographer Rojeena, I had tricked Dedy into thinking it was a spur of the moment “vacation shoot”. The day prior to the proposal, I saw a group taking photos on the beach and asked Dedy: “hey, would you be interested in doing that sometime during our trip?”. From there, the seed was planted… and she still had no idea I would be proposing the next day!

Best tip for proposing in Maui

If shooting in a rocky area, make sure your footwear is in check! I had to tighten the straps on my sandles in order to walk over to our desired proposal location. Definitely worth it, though!

What is your love story?

We fell in love working in the same hospital. At first, it was quirky things like fighting over bananas and cookies. Eventually we realized how much we shared in common and began gazing at each other across the room. Finally I asked her out and the rest was history.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

I wanted somewhere exotic and far from home. As the ideal combination of mountains, palm trees, and beaches, Maui was the perfect choice.

What is your proposal story?

I chose the “fly on the wall” approach with my photographer Rojeena. Unfortunately the high tide washed away our selected location, but Rojeena offered an alternative location a few minutes away down the beach, which worked perfectly. I coordinated the change in plans during dinner with my to-be-fiancé, where she questioned my strange mood and constant bathroom breaks. Fortunately she still didn’t predict the proposal and we got the perfect surprised look on our first photo at the beach. She remembered to say “yes” a few minutes after I asked.

What is your love story?

We met a sunrise hike of a volcano mountain in Bali. We reunited in Chicago where we got to spend more time together and ultimately spend the entire pandemic under one roof. After several months we decided to commit to each other and get a new place together.

The volcano Mountain in Maui is similar to the one where we first met in bali so I went for it

What is your proposal story?

The original plan was to propose on the top where the sunrise viewing was however due to the limited passes it was not possible. The photographer suggested an alternative not too far away so we stopped there with our bikes instead.

Whatever you do in Maui will be charming and romantic. Best place I could’ve chosen. Nothing that could’ve been better or different.

How did you meet?

What is your love story?

Shelsy is a fantastic person, she cares deeply about others and the environment. She motivates me to be better every day and we have great communication in our relationship. We always find a way to see further than our differences and focus on what makes our relationship strong and solid.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Shelsy LOVES the sea, so ideally it would have to be somewhere where I could have easy access to the beach and also have a beautiful background with the palm trees and mountains. Hawaii overall was my choice, then I narrowed it down to Maui.

What is your proposal story?

We started the day waking up at 3:00AM to drive to Haleakala National Park to see the sunrise in below freezing temperatures. It was an amazing experience and a great start to the big day. Afterwards we grabbed lunch in the city and walked along the beach before heading back to our hotel to get ready for the surprise. We drove to Ulua beach and walked on the boardwalk until we reached the beach and the designated spot where I would get on one knee. I told Shelsy what made me fall in love with her and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. She said yes and afterwards we had a photoshoot with our flytographer Natalia, it was so much fun! Lastly we headed to a nearby restaurant to have dinner and celebrate.

Best tip for proposing in Maui

Definitely rent a car, the distances are long and public transport is not as easily available as other places. Even though luckily I had perfect weather I think it's something you need to have in mind. Reserve everything in advance! Things go out quick

Gregory's Proposal Story in Maui

What is your love story?

We met through a mutual friend in DC when Gregory came back to his alma mater for homecoming. At the time, Gregory was living in Oakland, CA and Cha’koya was living in DC. Within a month of first meeting, Gregory was on a plane back to DC to come visit her. We love to travel. Our first real date was a trip to Seattle for Valentine’s day! At dinner one night in Seattle, Gregory looked over at her and said, “I can picture us and a couple of kiddos.” After two years of being long distance, Gregory moved across the country to join Cha’koya in DC.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Maui has always been on the top of my list in terms of travel. Once I saw Baldwin Beach while doing research on the island, then I knew this was the place. The beach provides a variety of shots other than the water and my fiancé had never seen waves large enough to surf.

What is your proposal story?

During the initial photoshoot, I had the ring box in my back pocket and had to mange keeping my body facing forward so that my curious fiancé wouldn’t start asking questions. I can remember a few instances when I had to grab her hand so that she wouldn’t graze the ring box just below my lower back. Once we had taken a few shots by the lifeguard stand and on the edge of the beach, Rojeena signaled to me that the lighting was perfect. As the waves receded back into the ocean I grabbed my fiancé‘s hand and told her “You already know what this is.” Immediately, she was overwhelmed with emotion and I told her how much she had already impacted my life and how much I was looking forward to advancing our relationship for years to come. Our relationship started more than 3,000 miles apart, she lived in DC while I was in San Francisco. Now just over two years later, we are officially engaged and finally in the same time zone to start our next chapter.

What is your love story?

Michelle and I met in college when we were actually competitive ballroom dance partners. While we were very close friends at the time, we actually did not start dating until about 5 years later at the end of medical school. Our journey fortunately took us both to Cincinnati for our residency training. Our relationship has been an incredible story of two cultures intertwining and a genuine friendship blossoming.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

I knew I was traveling out West to California but wanted to surprise Michelle with something truly spectacular. After seeing some of the sample photo galleries of the photographers in Maui, I was convinced that was where I wanted to propose!

What is your proposal story?

The entire trip to Maui was actually a surprise for my fiancé. We were out in the Bay Area for a work conference and the plan was to stay out West for a few extra days after the conference. I told Michelle that we were going to LA for four days, but as we were checking into the kiosk at the airport, I told her I had a secret for her and the tickets to Maui popped up on the screen at that moment. I proposed to her later that night after we arrived in Maui after our Flytographer concierge and photographer suggested Po'olenalena Beach for the location. It was a quiet, "locals" beach that was very intimate. I proposed around sunset and she said YES! We could not be happier with how things went.

What is your love story?

I met Kennedy through her older sister who was dating my best friend at the time. It wasnt’t until 8 years later Kennedy and I had started dating.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

You can’t go wrong with Maui! It’s hard to mess up a proposal there! Also, the views are unbeatable and we both love everything about Maui.

What is your proposal story?

My family and I had planned to go to a nice restaurant an hour and a half early (she thought we were on time for dinner) so I could take Kennedy down to the beach and play guitar for her. When we got to the restaurant my dad faked that he had gone to the hostess to check in. He came back to the group and told us it was going to be a while so my mom suggested I take my guitar down to the beach and play for a while. Kennedy insisted she had to go to the restroom inside the restaurant which was right next to the bar that her parents, who were supposed to surprise her, were hiding at. We went inside and I shielded her from seeing the bar area where her parents were. After we were done with the restrooms we made it down to the beach area. I set up my guitar and started playing for her. I played a couple songs we both love to sing together and then it was time. I stood her up and told her, “I know we’ve been talking about doing this for a while.” At that moment she knew exactly what was going on, as she covered her mouth with her hand in shock. I could only muster a few more words until I started to tear up. So I got down on one knee and said, “Kennedy Renae Shields will you marry me?” Without hesitation, she said yes! I was so happy to finally have proposed because it was 6 days into our trip and and the anticipation was killing me the entire vacation. I put the ring on her finger, stood up, and hugged her. Little did she know her parents were right behind her ready to surprise her. When she saw her parents she couldn’t believe it and said, “could this be any more perfect?” All in all the proposal went just as planned and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of everything.

What is your love story?

10 years ago, my girlfriend and I met when we were in high school. We both were competitive swimmers and swam on the same team. We stayed very close friends even as I continued studies in Victoria, BC, and she got a scholarship to school in Texas. We both had feelings for each other but were chickens to say anything because we didn't want to ruin/lose the friendship if the other person didn't feel the same way. It wasn't until 5 years later, that we planned and booked a 3 week backpacking trip across Japan! This was a trip that no family or friend believed would actually happen. But, Natalie and I both loved to travel and so we began our 513 day countdown. This trip was life-changing and was were our friendship grew into love. I knew she was the one for me because she always made my heart smile. She has the most beautiful, compassionate, giving, and loving heart I know. She supports me through life, no matter what. I love her with all my heart, but she is also my best friend. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with her.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Maui is beautiful. My girlfriend loves sunsets and the beach. Maui offered me the opportunity for a romantic and unforgettable proposal destination.

What is your proposal story?

The proposal went perfectly. With the help of my shoot concierge, and especially my photographer Marie, we were able to plan the perfect proposal. My girlfriend had originally booked this photo shoot as a memory for this trip to Maui. We were celebrating out 5 years together as well as my 25th birthday. I knew Maui was the perfect place to propose, so I contacted Marie in secret to plan this day. I wanted the beginning of the shoot to go as planned, just regular photos by the beach. I wanted my girlfriend to have no idea this proposal was happening. Marie thought of doing half the photo shoot on one beach, then drive down he street to another. Marie, the shoot concierge, and I planned cues for the special day. The day finally came, and when we were at the second beach, Marie asked my girlfriend to take some single shots of her looking towards the ocean/sunset. This was my cue to sneak behind her and get on my knee. I called my girlfriends name from behind and she turned around and was so happy and surprised! I am so grateful for how the proposal went, and the beautiful photos we both have to forever remember this special moment.

What is your love story?

Ana and I met at a bar after I moved to Houston, TX for work. Ana was funny, kind and loved dogs just as much as I do (we now own the most amazing Golden Retriever)
