What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Madrid?

We loved staying at the Sonder Malasagna ! Having an apartment made travel with the wide age range so much easier and it’s PERFECTLY LOCATED! Right in the center of Madrid just outside side of the trendiest spot in town. We left every morning with no plan and stumbled upon great food, unique stores, and friendly humans!

What are the best things to do in Madrid?

I love contemporary art so for me the highlight was visiting a few contemporary art galleries - Galeria Lacometa, Galería Elvira González, Heinrich Ehrhardt, and Juana de Aizpuru. Cool locations, not too far from one another, interesting spaces and a great way to work some art into your schedule without having to stand in long lines to the Prado and Reina Sofia museums.

What is the best tip for celebrating your birthday in Madrid?

Tapas, tapas, tapas :) Also, be nice to yourself and stay at a nice hotel. I really loved the ambiance and the caring staff of Hotel Totem. Oh - and don't book an early morning shoot in Malasana the day after Real Madrid beats Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League :)

Madrid is a great city full of amazing museums and monuments, I recommend starting at Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol: The Heart of the City then must visit Retiro Park and the Crystal Palace and then Royal Palace and Gardens. Go shopping at Grand Via and attend a Flamenco Show at Casa Patas

I loved exploring Malasaña, the coffee shops the vintage stores. We wound't have gone to that neighbourhood if it wasn't for the flytography, so I am so happy I picked that location for the shoot!

Right away, hire a local guide for a personal multi hour tour of architecture, history, food and drink. You can book online. In such a culturally dense place it provides a simple overview at a pace thats not overwhelming, avoids the crowds, hits bars (and bathrooms when needed!), and answers so many questions that pop up which regular bus tours and group guides can't do. This provides a great foundation for the rest of the visit.

What is your best overall travel tip for Madrid?

***I will also be filling out my feedback forms for Barcelona & Lisbon, so you may want to just combine all three like they have done in the past. :) *** I feel that Spain & Portugal, for me anyway, are less of an "I absolutely must see/do this" type of countries and more of a "I just want to wander and get lost, and see what I find". They are both more of a sensory experience as opposed to a bucket list one, if that makes sense. I'm a foodie... and I must say that I ate very well in Madrid. Here are my recommendations: (1) walk to Plaza Mayor towards the diners in the little alleyways and get yourself a Bocadillos de Calamares, (2) Chocolate con Churros (which must be eaten together) at Chocolateria de San Gines and (3) try a shot of locally produced Licor de Madronos. If possible, get a Mermelada Artesanal Madrono (fruit jelly jam) to take home with you!
