If you're a Royals buff, start the day with a packed picnic breakfast in Kensington Gardens followed by a self-guided tour of the palace. Afterwards, Santander bikes will get you through the gardens in a flash and is the nicest way to make the trek down the very long stretch of road that leads to Buckingham Palace. When the Palace is open, I personally think it's well worth the ticketed entry and tour of the state rooms.
