Mary's Travel Tips for Kona

What are the best places to eat and drink in Kona?

For malasadas, the best were from Tex Drive Inn (Honokaa). In Waimea, the bbq from The Fish and the Hog (brisket tacos!) was very delicious, and we loved the burgers and fries from Village Burger. Hands down favorite meal was from Randy's Huli Chicken (south of Kona). For fresh eats, we loved Kaya's (south of Kona), The Booch Bar (Hilo), Halabar (at Mauna Lani Auberge), Tin Shack Bakery (Pahoa). I loved all the fruit, and every virgin and alcoholic pina colada I tasted. And anything with lilikoi is so good!

What are the best things to do in Kona?

Watching for whales (remember to pack binoculars if traveling to the Big Island in the winter months!), walking along the water, swimming & snorkeling in the ocean, Hapuna Beach.

What is your best overall travel tip for Kona?

The entire island is incredible to explore, so enjoy some beach days on the Kohala Coast and then explore the east and southern parts of the Island for a completely different experience. Polulu Trail, Kilauea Iki Trail at Volcanoes NP, Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic site. Worth waking early to watch all the spectacular sunrises.

Top Travel Tip: just know that Hawaii operates on island time, so everyone & everything is pretty laid back. Super cool when you’re relaxing on a beach, not as cool when you’re waiting for your food in a restaurant (things like that)

What is your best overall travel tip for Kona?

Embrace the early morning hours! Coming from the West Coast to Hawaii provides a gentle jet-lag that will get you (and kids) out of bed early enough to head to a far flung beach and watch the sun rise, or explore the tide-pools before it gets too hot. Don't forget to check the tide schedule!

What is your best overall travel tip for Kona?

This trip with our little son we enjoyed Hapuna beach and A-Bay because they were both really toddler-friendly. But in past trips before having our son, we loved going to the little town of Hawi, driving up to Mauna Kea Visitor Centre at night to see the stars and hiking down into Pololu Valley which is incredible! We'll definitely do it again with our son when he's a bit older.

Michelle's Travel Tips for Kona

What is your best overall travel tip for Kona?

Although we like to use public transportation when we travel, having a car was really important for this trip. It is the best way to see the Big Island. Kona was a great place to stay and relax while close to sights both to the north and south. Don't miss the beautiful white sand beaches about an hour north of Kona like Beach 69 and Puako Secret Beaches. We also loved our day south of Kona. We visited the Place of Refuge which is a National Park. It happened to be a day when they showcase many of the cultural traditions of the Big Island and we learned so much about the food and customs of the Hawaiian people. Afterwards, we ate lunch at a roadside tropical fruit farm and visited a tropical beach.
