We stumbled into this amazingly cool speakeasy with sophisticated cocktails that looked like a barbershop on the outside. Instead of giving you the name, ask around to some of your waiters or waitresses - they might be able to steer you in the right direction!

Dive into the Fringe Festival. Tons of family/kid friendly activities. Our favorite was an immersive dance performance on a moving double decker red bus which took us around Edinburgh, all the while, with passengers performing on the bus. Amazing, immersive and so whimsical. It was like a dreamy little trip. And timed right, coincide your visit with the Edinburgh Book Festival. Love the unique vibes and venues at all the sites.

What is your best overall travel tip for Edinburgh?

Edinburgh really is a silly, hilly city. We loved hiking around and exploring off-the-beaten path places like Dean Village - but be prepared - the hills can be challenging if walking all day.

Lauren's Travel Tips for Edinburgh

What is your best overall travel tip for Edinburgh?

For Scotland, I would say to rent a car and explore some of the smaller cities outside of Edinburgh. We loved the city {especially Old Town} but after about 2 days we were ready to step out and see some other areas! I would recommend driving to Callander--you pass some great sites on the way and the town is so cute! If you go, stay at Abbotsford Lodge.

Devil's Advocate Restaurant, but get a reservation or else you will be waiting. Also, go to the top of Arthur's Seat. It's not that far of a trek and well worth the time. Don't be afraid to get a little touristy and check out the Whiskey Experience. Finally, definitely have tea at the Signet Library.

What is your best overall travel tip for Edinburgh?

In Scotland if traveling with kids be mindful that many friendly pubs just don’t accept children after 8:00 or so, it’s just a different mentality from some places in the US. Eat earlier, and use the neighborhood grocery for fabulous bread/wine/cheese later!

Edinburgh is an extremely welcoming city. We highly recommend letting your tastebuds guide you to the diverse cuisines Edinburgh has to offer. Sit at the bar and make friends with the patrons and staff. They can give you so much insight and your friendliness is usually rewarded with a complimentary drink or sample.
