Emil's Travel Tips for Charleston

What are the best places to eat and drink in Charleston?

A few Blackberry Jam biscuits and a coffee from Callie's Hot Little Biscuit is the perfect way to start off the day. A gin and tonic on the porch at Hotel Zero George is the perfect way to end it.

What are the best things to do in Charleston?

Just walking the side streets in the South of Broad neighborhood, admiring the antebellum mansions and gardens.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Charleston?

Our kids loved the scavenger hunt at Boone Hall Plantation. Patriot's Point and White Point Gardens were also big hits.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Charleston?

Mex 1, which was recommended to us by our photographer, Michelle. We went there after photos, sat outside on the top deck and had amazing Mexican food! Highlight was the "Shark Attack" drink for the kids. Kids were asking to go back again and again...even after we left Charleston.

What are the best things to do in Charleston?

Besides our photos (isn't it fun seeing the town before people are all around?!?), we enjoyed The Market and especially Callie's Hot Little Biscuit! Those biscuits were phenomenal and they even make their gluten free ones from scratch-just give them 45 mins., so plan ahead! We loved Sullivan's Island and spent the day at the beach after enjoying a meal at Mex 1. We enjoyed walking The Battery in the evening as the sun went down, and kids were able to get the last of their wiggles out around the park and canons.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Charleston?

Take them down to The Battery at the end of the day to get their wiggles out. Great view, walking path, plenty of parking, and our kids favorite...canons! Pack some snacks if you go to the Yorktown. There is so much to see, and we ended up leaving after 3 hours because we didn't have food with us (they have food trucks, but that day it was just sweets and coffee). Louise BBQ and Mex 1 were both fantastic options that are family friendly.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Charleston?

Our favorite restaurant in Charleston was Vicious Biscuit! It was actually recommended by our Flytographer Kelsey and we loved it. Great service and even better food!

What are the best things to do in Charleston?

Our favorite activity in Charleston was visiting the McLeod Plantation. Our tour guide was informative and knowledgeable. She really gave us insight into the history of the area. Also, if you like honey, visit the Savannah Bee Company shop on King St. They have tons of different honey (with free samples!), mead, and even skin care products. We loved this store so much we ended up going back twice!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Charleston?

Be sure to stop by the visitors center in downtown Charleston! They have some pretty interesting exhbits there with plenty of space for everyone to spread out and explore. They can also help make arrangements for any tours you might be interested in. Bonus: it's right next door to the Charleston Children's Museum.

Prepare for a great food outing. Go to the communal table at the Fig. The service, the restaurant and the food are terrific. And 167 Raw is pretty great too! For those who, like me, like modern art, try the Robert Lange Studios - they had lots of interesting stuff!

Annastasia's Travel Tips for Charleston

What is your best overall travel tip for Charleston?

Our original plans had us heading to a tropical island. Plans change, but we were on a mission to bring the tropical vibes to Charleston. Credit goes to Alexis for finding these island inspired locals. Stop by Huriyali to be transported without needing a passport. I recommend going with some time so you can enjoy an açaí bowl under the sun in the private courtyard. For a refreshing treat to break up shopping downtown, stop by Rudis caffe e Vino for some frose! Not only is it delicious, its the perfect accessory for some selfies! Add the outdoor patio, with its island inspired decor and porch swing, and you basically have a styled photo shoot set at your disposal. There is plenty to do in Charleston, but Shem Creek really isn't a place you want to skip over. By day rent a kayak or paddle board through the Creek, stop for lunch at any one of the outdoor bars, then at night take a sunset cruise! Departing from the creek, The Palmetto Breeze is an absolute must do! The cruise runs for 2 hours with snacks and booze available to enjoy while you sit back and watch the sunset. Perfect for two and even more fun with a large party!
