Joe & Madison's Proposal Story in Charleston

How did you meet?

Hinge

What is your love story?

We have dated for about two years, which included mostly pandemic time. This allowed us to spend time with just the two of us, and really grow close to each other to the point that we are about inseparable. We spent our first Christmas together in December 2020 and shared time with both families. I knew when I woke up Christmas morning, I was ready to spend every holiday, and every day with her. That's when I started looking for a ring.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Charleston is a place that Madison loved growing up, and it was somewhere we could spend a weekend that she could dress up, but not suspect anything.

What is your proposal story?

We came to Charleston with her thinking it was a couples weekend. My picture slot was from 2-3 so I knew I needed to stall her and try to keep her in the hotel all Friday morning (we had 20 people waiting to surprise her that were all staying nearby). We went to lunch with another couple and that helped calm me down, and spend some time. We separated from the other two and I proposed after lunch at Tempest near the Pineapple Fountain. We then went to grab a drink at the Citrus Club with our two friends, but I had invited friends and family from both sides to surprise her and celebrate with us!

Best tip for proposing in Charleston

The weather is definitely fickle. Have a dry backup plan and don't trust the weather app!

David's Proposal Story in Charleston

What is your love story?

Kath and I met while on a travel tour through Eastern Europe in 2016. I'm American and she is Canadian, and we bonded over similar life experiences and the thirst for global adventures (I've been to 42 countries and she's been to 41!). It wasn't until months later when she agreed to meet up again, that we embarked on what would be a years-long transborder courtship that included dozens of flights back and forth, and many overseas adventures together. When the pandemic hit in 2020 and we were cut off by a closed border for over three months, it really forced us to decide where we wanted to take our relationship. Through 2 years of long distance and flying back and forth every weekend, a global pandemic that brought the world to its knees resulting in borders being closed indefinitely, and flights being decimated left, right and center, constant jabs of helplessness when all you want to do is be next to each other, and 95 days in literal isolation with no sense of certainty as to when you can see each other again, there hasn't been a doubt in my mind that she is my forever partner.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

We were originally booked to fly to Cabo and I had plans to propose on the beach during the week after Christmas. Due to the increasing travel restrictions and public health warnings, we ended up cancelling that trip and I quickly re-planned to propose on the beach at home in Charleston. Isle of Palms has been our favorite place in the area to watch the sunset, so it was my first choice for a proposal location. After a cancelled flight caused us to push the shoot out by a week however, I decided that I just couldn't wait and went ahead and proposed on Christmas morning in my living room. The Flytographer shoot became an engagement shoot, and we couldn't be happier with the results.

What is your proposal story?

After cancelling my original plans to propose in Cabo and also my back-up plan to propose on the beach in Charleston (#2020, am I right?), I ultimately got down on my knee on Christmas morning after we had opened presents. I set up my camera and pretended to take photos on a timer, when in reality it was taking a video to record the whole event. We were both still in our pajamas, and it just felt like the right timing after all the cancellations, travel restrictions, closed borders, and other hurdles we'd had to overcome last year. In the end, it was all about us being together in the moment and not about where we were or what we were wearing.

Hannah's Proposal Story in Charleston

What is your love story?

Hannah and I had gone to school together for as long as I can remember, but we never really knew each other. We both were in marching band, I played drums and Hannah played saxophone. One day, Hannah asked me to give her a ride after band practice. I don’t even remember why she needed a ride, but I’m glad she did! We started texting afterwards and the rest is history.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Hannah and I love to travel and explore new places. Charleston is such a beautiful and romantic city, so I thought it would be the perfect place for a surprise proposal. It now holds a very special place in our hearts and I have a feeling we will be visiting for years to come!

What is your proposal story?

I had chosen Philadelphia Alley in Charleston to propose. We had walked through the day before but Hannah had no idea that it was where I was going to pop the question. After getting dressed up for the evening, we headed in that direction. I was starting to get worried when I noticed there were a lot of people around the spot I was supposed to propose so the photographer could secretly take pictures. Fortunately, the crowd cleared out and we were able to have a private and special moment that was so perfectly captured. Most importantly, she said yes!
