CAJÚ gelato in El Born is the best gelato we’ve had in ages! The owners are so kind and really put a lot of care into sourcing the ingredients. We went multiple times and every flavor was delicious. For tapas, Cal Pep was absolutely worth the wait!

Jenni's Travel Tips for Barcelona

What are the best places to eat and drink in Barcelona?

Our favorite restaurant was Xavier Pellicer for fine dining. Our favorite bar was the rooftop bar at The Edition Hotel. Our favorite local hole-in-the-wall place was Espai Puntal and our favorite place for coffee and smoothies was Nudes (both located in the Born district).

What are the best things to do in Barcelona?

La sagrada familia is a must see. It was worth it to book a tour for the church and one of the towers. We also loved the Born neighborhood full of trendy shops and art galleries. It felt like Etsy in real life. Loved seeing artisans working on their crafts in the stores!

What is the best tip for celebrating your anniversary in Barcelona?

The rooftop bar at The Edition hotel is a perfect spot for an anniversary cocktail with a view of the whole city. Xavier Pellicer is a romantic spot for an upscale fine dining experience in a beautiful setting.

What are the best things to do in Barcelona?

We took a Gothic Quarter free walking tour with Runner Bean Tours, a local company. It was a 2.5 hour tour filled with history and context and I would highly recommend it to have a best understanding of Barcelona’s development. If you can get Shira, be happy!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Barcelona?

Traveling with young kids is nice, but it is a bit hard in Barcelona because of the timelines. There is very little to do with children between 3pm-8pm as there are limited restaurants, very young kids cannot tolerate lots of walking/exploring/shopping and then dinners are quite late. Also, playgrounds are typically sand. So, if you enjoy them, be prepared to have cause for showering shortly thereafter and maybe a change of shoes should sand bother your children.

Abbie's Travel Tips for Barcelona

What are the best places to eat and drink in Barcelona?

This isn’t the season of life for fine dining experiences, especially when traveling with 3 young kids. However, breakfast was definitely everyone’s favorite meal. Skip the overpriced hotel breakfast and pop into any cafe for a pastry and coffee.

What are the best things to do in Barcelona?

The VR tour done by Casa Batlló was really well done, and engaged my kids as well as the adults. It especially helped my kids connect with the nature-inspired elements of Gaudí’s designs, when I believe they would’ve had some trouble making those connections otherwise.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Barcelona?

When using the metro, get the family pass (T-Familiar) ticket. It’s good for 8 metro trips and is only €10, much cheaper than buying everyone their own individual ticket, and depending on the trip/time of day, can also be cheaper than a taxi (especially with a large family). The metro was quick and easy to use, and the kids love the new experience. Barcelona also has a lot of tucked away playgrounds, many of them near the main tourist attractions. We always tried to stop at an àrea de joc infantil so the kids can run it out on the way to a tour which may require them to be quieter than they like to be. All public playgrounds can be found on Google Maps ahead of time so you know when one is just around the corner.

What are the best things to do in Barcelona?

Gothic quarter has many great sights to see, including street performances. Spend some time walking along the beach boardwalk. Though touristy, there are some really fun nightclubs over there!

What is the best tip for solo travel in Barcelona?

For solo travelers, do not engage with anyone who approaches you randomly. Pickpocketers are very common here. Where a shoulder bag or be aware of your surroundings.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Barcelona?

Flax and kale! Delicious and healthy and what a beautiful atmosphere. Really also liked Virens inside Almanac BarcelonaZ such a nice vibe and many dishes are vegetarian forward. Nice wine suggestions. And we brought our 3/7 yo right at 8 pm and the staff was so wonderful to them!

What are the best things to do in Barcelona?

Tibidabo! Go early! Ride the funicular there. Love the views and old school kiddy amusement park charm. Also loved Laberint d’Horta, beautiful place and can get away from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona. Rowboats at ciutedella park were a huge hit with the kids. But mostly we loved roaming in Gothic quarter with empty bellies and attempted an unofficial food rawl!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Barcelona?

Google maps to see if restaurants are open, many don’t open until 8! If going with the kids, Get the kids adjusted early to sleeping late. We napped ours in the afternoon despite them no longer napping at home so we could be out often till 11 or so!

A hidden gem was our paella cooking experience with @thisispaella_. We booked through airbnb experiences and it was a highlight of the trip! Our group got a tour of the Boquearieas Market and then returned to our hosts apartment to help make paella, sangria, and crema catalana for dessert! Our host Elias was so warm, welcoming, and knowledgable and it was the perfect about of hands-on. We could relax and enjoy while still participating a little bit!

Krista's Travel Tips for Barcelona

What are the best places to eat and drink in Barcelona?

Barcelona is a place with many amazing restaurants but our favorite place to head would be the mercados (markets)! Mercado de la Boqueria is a definite front runner with endless options of delicious food and drinks! Great for a group or family so that everyone can find something they love!

What are the best things to do in Barcelona?

The beaches of Barcelona are beautiful but our favorite would be Platja de la Mar Bella for sure! Be sure to pick an area where you’re the most comfortable as it is a naturalist beach in some parts — it’s very family friendly down by a cute beach bar that rents our umbrellas and chairs called Caribe Bella Mar! We spent almost every afternoon at the beach after mornings filled with museums, landmarks, and other adventures!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Barcelona?

We have two boys - 5 and 7 years old - who love to explore but also are little kids! The beach was a great way to keep them busy but there is also a great aquarium, many kids parks in the city, and plenty of places to pique their interests! The mercados were a fun way to let them try new foods without being stuck! Barcelona is very family friendly - we would definitely go back!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Barcelona?

We have two kids ages, 16 and 10. Spain overall was an amazing to travel with kids of any age. We started in Madrid and took the high speed train to Barcelona. Make sure to allocate time for culture as well as fun. Museums and sites can be fun. Read up on it before going, Give the kids some background. Tell them you will have questions for them after the tour so they can feel engaged. And also make sure to listen to their needs and wants. My kids have been traveling oversees since 6 months old and they will tell you the memories and fun we have had, even doing museums.

What is the best tip for going on your honeymoon to Barcelona?

Getting a hotel on the beach with a pool is a great way to split your time between "vacation" and "trip." We were able to split our time really easily this way. We'd spend an hour or two at the pool after touring Sagrada Familia or Park Guell. We got the best of both worlds! :)

What are the best places to eat and drink in Barcelona?

La Alcoba Azul - Tapas. They are so busy that they joked and asked me to write a bad review so people stop coming! The restaurant and bar have young staff who are lots of fun. The tapas are outstanding and great craft cocktails. Overall the experience was so good, we went twice on one trip!

What are the best things to do in Barcelona?

While not a hidden gem, La Sagrada Familia is a must-see! Just so impressive. In terms of hidden gems, I would say Montjuïc Cemetery was really cool to explore, it's on the way from the airport, so maybe make a pit stop on your way in!

What is the best tip for a romantic getaway in Barcelona?

Get a hotel with an underground grotto pool and spa! So amazing to take a moment to relax with each other in a calm environment with the city roaring above. And the last tip - save the stress, book all of your dinner reservations before coming! So worth not worrying about it each day.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Barcelona?

The Gebre Bar at the Intercontinental Barcelona. Recently renovated and utterly jaw dropping. The bartender, Jordan, made a special drink for our daughter, Zoey, which made her feel like a total Princess. Get the 'Terra'; hands down the best drink Ive ever had!

What are the best things to do in Barcelona?

FC Barcelona Official Store; walking around aimlessly on Las Ramblas admiring the architecture; the beaches; The Banksy Exhibition; and the famous La Boqueria Market, but our absolute favorite day was taking the AVE high-speed train to Monstserrat for the day. Super easy to navigate and well worth the ~1 hr trip for such an amazing experience.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Barcelona?

Barcelona has a very relaxed vibe, which is perfect for traveling with kids. For littles (and even bigs!), there are small playgrounds almost everywhere you turn. Let them stop and admire the pigeons, go down the slide, grab a fruit or candy at the plentiful market stands surrounding you. For older kids, let them practice their Spanish with the locals, who are so patient and welcoming. I know phones and technology can be a touchy subject, but I really enjoyed watching my kids (9 and 15) use their phones to look up things, translate, take pictures, and learn more about something on their own. It was such a unique, continuous window into what was sparking joy for their complex, growing little brains.
