Travel Story

I was headed to Edinburgh to speak at a conference, and my hubby jumped at the chance to come along. The 11th anniversary of our first date fell during the trip, so I surprised him with our Flytographer photo shoot. To say we had an amazing time in Scotland is an understatement. From the kind and friendly people to the incredible views to lazy days spent popping in and out of pubs sampling local craft beer, we couldn't have asked for a better trip. We stayed in New Town and enjoyed shopping on Georges Street and eating and drinking on Rose Street. Within only a few minutes, we could be in Old Town, visiting the Edinburgh Castle, walking down random cobblestone streets and again, sampling the delicious food and drinks. We also took a day trip to the Highlands, which was breathtaking. Pictures and videos do not do the scenery justice, and we were awed at the natural beauty of the region. We're already planning an extended trip back with our kiddos, and we look forward to exploring more of the country--maybe even renting a small RV like other families we met along our journey.

Travel Tips

Jilli, our amazing photographer, gave us an insider scoop on the Closes and recommended the Devil's Advocate, a restaurant we took pictures in front of. Not to be missed. We honestly didn't have a bad meal during our trip: everything from Dough (pizza) to The Kenilworth (fish and chips) to steak night and beer tasting at our hotel, The Angel's Share Hotel, was wonderful. Shopping-wise, I put a hurt on Joules (Georges Street) and the Woolen Mill (High Street), and my husband loved First XV Rugby Stuff in Haymarket. We purposely didn't schedule a lot of sightseeing adventures because we wanted to poke around at our own pace. Edinburgh Castle was incredible and you definitely have to walk (maybe even picnic) through Princes Street Gardens. I am a PR and marketing consultant for universities and schools, so we enjoyed checking out the University of Edinburgh campus and stopping at The Elephant House (where J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter) for a cup of tea. If walking around isn't enough exercise for you, purchase a day pass to PureGym or the Waldorf Astoria's health club--both have fantastic facilities. Be sure to ask locals for recommendations and sample traditional Scottish fare, whiskey and beer while you're there!
