Travel Story

Bali is beautiful. The landscapes are beautiful, the sites are beautiful, the people are beautiful, the food is beautiful, the beaches are beautiful, the sunsets are beautiful. I could go on about the island of Bali in Indonesia and how overwhelmingly beautiful it is. Honestly, one of the main reasons Bali was on my radar and why I wanted to visit is because of Bayu & Ivony’s photos. A year and a half prior I saw a gallery of theirs and my jaw dropped at how magical this place looked, and when I continued to see photos from the island I was in awe every single time. Not only that, but the stories I heard and how highly it came recommended just helped push my to book a ticket. So that’s exactly what I did - my best friend and I braved the 30+ hour journey from Canada with our backpacks and made our way. From the amazingly friendly and generous Balinese people who we met, to the delicious food we tried, to the beaches we “surfed” (I say that because we tried), to the clubs we danced in, and the sunsets we marvelled at - Bali has it all. Even the times that weren’t all amazing (as all trips have) when I got heat stroke, or my friend crashed the scooter (it happens to most), everyone was so kind and helpful we felt lucky. As the owner of one of the villas said, “You must feel lucky in this life for all you have.” And it’s hard not to when you’re surrounded by so much beauty in Bali :)

Travel Tips

- Eat everything! Don’t be shy, and try new things. - Learn how to drive a scooter, and well. They are amazing for touring yourself and having the freedom to explore on your own time and schedule - but BE CAREFUL! - Don’t just visit Bali, but nearby islands. Our favourites and top recommended are Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Cenigan, and Nusa Penida. They are not too far away, and definitely worth including in your itinerary. - Tegalalang Rice Terraces in Ubud are a must, where we had our shoot, is absolutely magical. It was more than I even imagined and would 100% recommend visiting at sunrise before the crowds and heat. It is like living a dream. - Spa days! Can’t miss an Indonesian spa day. From flower petal baths, to relaxing massage, scrubs, to sipping sweet tea by a pond. Make a day of it and pamper yourself - all at such a reasonable cost. Our favourite spa was Karsa Spa in Ubud, but make sure to make a reservation in advance. - Sunset dinner on the beach. There are so many beaches that offer on-beach dining. A table right on the sand with a few courses, all while watching the sun set. - Monkey Forest Ubud - though it is touristy and can be quite busy, it is worth checking out and is a fun time. Do make sure not to bring anything too shiny or valuable though - or if you are scared of monkeys. They might just hop on your back and go through your hair when you don’t expect it (speaking from experience!) - Bring sunscreen and DEET - especially if you are heading inland, you want insect repellent to keep you sane. These things are quite pricey once you are over there, so if you can bring them in advance it will save you!
