Meet Ayako in Tokyo

I've been photographing since I was 15. I was raised, lived and worked in so many different countries so I love meeting people from all over the world. I’m a visual storyteller. I strive to capture authentic honest moments through a photojournalistic approach to my work, and I love nothing more than witnessing and documenting genuine, spirited human connection. My work has been featured in various magazines and publications including Harpers and Bazaar, New York Times and the Guardian.

    Languages Spoken: English, Japanese, French.

Favourite Place to Shoot: Shinjuku, because shoots there can incorporate both the city and the wonderful nature in Shinjuku Gyoen park. The park is huge so something is always blooming!

Three Things

  1. I paint kimono and am still learning from my 83 year old kimono painting master. I studied at Aoyama Kimono School and I’m a licensed Kimono Kitsuke master and also own a Kimino rental company.
  2. I'm an amateur opera singer and I play the piano and the cello! I also went to Le Cordon Bleu and I love discovering new hidden restaurants.
  3. My friends ask me how many lives have you had? Because I have so many hobbies and passions. I was raised in Japan, England, USA and lived in Australia, New Zealand, Lithuania, Monaco, France and Switzerland.
