Rome is a great city with kids even though everyone says the opposite. Everything is easily walkable and even something like going to the market is a different and fun experience for kids. They also loved the water fountains everywhere, it was a daily activity for our 18 month old. Plus everyone there loves kids, it was so great to be there with them.

Our favourite restaurant was Taverna Trilussa in the beautiful area of Trastevere. Dine on the most delicious pasta dishes and then stroll through the magical streets of Trastevere. It’ll be a night to remember!

This was the first time we returned to Rome with small children so we did all the major sights and landmarks. Our kids loved the Colosseum, which we opted for a private tour and then ventured out on our own to take in the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon…with plenty of Gelato stops in between!

Travel early in the season to avoid the heat waves and crowds of July and August. Plan tours early in the day to stay a little cooler and book a hotel with a pool to beat the afternoon heat. We pile on a lot of gelato stops and pepper in live outdoor music and delicious restaurants for the entire family to enjoy!

The Hassler Hotel rooftop bar had the most beautiful views of the city. We loved Hostaria Di Pastini Pizzaria near pantheon area pizza was so good and on a cute street bustling with people

We loved everything in Rome the beauty of the coliseum and pantheon were are favorites. We did a fun cooking class just outside of Rome in Frascati took the train it was a hidden gem

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Rome?

I traveled With teens so much easier because they are interested in the history. Best advice for any age kid is to be sure you pre book all tours so you avoid long lines and waiting. It makes the experience so much better especially for kids plus all the walking is already a lot so taking out that extra waiting and standing is key I tealled loved our tour company EF Go Ahead Tours who did all of this for us. I also Used Get Your Guide for extra activities

Al42 was a delicious option for quick eat inside and take away. The pasta was superb and service efficient, which makes a huge difference when on time a time crunch traveling with small children.

Colosseum of course was a favorite! Make sure to book those underground tickets online a month in advance!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Rome?

We love using our Osprey child carrier for kids up to 4 yrs old. We also traveled with yeti bottles to keep our drinks cold and to fill up with the Roman water. I’d also recommend the Apple AirTags in bracelets for kids walking around as areas were packed shoulder to shoulder in some of the high tourist spots. Most sites are free for under 18, so book on official sites or in person. We also got some Roman soldier and goddess costumes in advance for the kids, and they loved them! It made the experience of the colosseum and forum feel EXTRA and also they got treated like little stars by workers and tourists ;)

Armando Al Pantheon came highly recommended, and it quickly became our top dining spot in Rome. The seasonal artichoke and mozzarella, along with the rigatoni, were absolute highlights that we’ll be reminiscing about for years to come. The Colosseum was truly awe-inspiring. Learning about the rich culture and history of the events that took place beneath our feet left a profound impact. Our visit to the Sistine Chapel happened to coincide with a Wednesday, and our luck continued when we wandered over to St. Peter’s Basilica afterward, only to stumble upon the Pope conducting his Wednesday service! It was one of those quintessential “only in Rome” moments that my husband and I will cherish forever.

It’s wise to plan your activities in advance to avoid long waits in lines. Additionally, don’t forget to schedule some downtime for yourself and indulge in a spa or relaxing experience.

Al42 in the Monti neighborhood near the Colosseum. It’s a small spot with counter service and absolutely fantastic pasta. Probably our favorite meal of the trip and lots of vegetarian options!
