What are the best things to do in Rome?

My favorite experience in Rome was taking a cooking class. We learned how to make homemade pasta and tiramisu. This was a hands-on class where we actually got to make the dishes and then eat our creations. Not only did we learn how to make pasta and tiramisu, but we got to taste several traditional Italian foods (buffalo mozzarella, truffles, Prosecco, etc), and learn about some Italian food traditions. It was a blast!

Loved Castro Protorio! Food was wonderful and people were so nice. Also the Brassai! Excellent food and great service.

Trevi Fountain, Castel Sant'Angelo, The Colosseum, and of course St. Peter's Square. Went on a tour bus so that we could really get the feel of the city and some of the other highlights.

Osteria Reposto was our favorite meal under their outdoor lights. Their tuna tartar was amazing, honestly everything was amazing!

What are the best things to do in Rome?

We really enjoyed doing a private tour of the Vatican with What A Life Tours. There is nothing like having private access to the Vatican museum during sunset and stepping into the Sistine Chapel as the sun is beginning to set. It was phenomenal. We also loved the green hop on hop off bus which hits all the landmarks and makes getting around easy! Make sure to stop for gelato as a daily treat too!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Rome?

There is so much to see and do that our daughter enjoyed every aspect of it to be honest. Pack lots of snacks, sometimes it’s hard to find something to eat immediately because it is not a quick service setting like the US.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Rome?

We didn't have a favorite restaurant. We looked at Google reviews and dropped into restaurants when hungry. We loved the ability to be free lance with eating and not tied down to a schedule for food.

What are the best things to do in Rome?

We loved the private tour with early entry tour of the Vatican. Susana Corona was a fantastic guide. We were the first to enter the Sistine chapel which was jaw dropping. We also enjoyed St Peter's Basilica and the Colosseum tour. I would also recommend the night electric bike tour as an introduction to the Rome tourist sights. It gave a great overview.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Rome?

I would try not to overschedule. Leave some free time to wander the streets of Rome. Be aware of your surroundings. Enjoy the culture, people and food. It's an amazing place with so much history.

Favorite restaurant was Il Padellaccio 2 which is located in the heart of Rome. The servers were outgoing and comedic, they made our night out so much fun! The food was delicious!

The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill were my husbands favorite places to see, while I enjoyed Vatican city. As a person of Faith, my absolute favorite place was Santa Scala to visit the steps that Jesus was said to have walked on His last day, which were moved from Pontius Pilots Palace to Rome after Christianity was legalized.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Rome?

Get up early before the crowds!! We would be up walking around at 7 am and aim to be back to our accommodations by noon. Then set out later around supper. Try to book events in advance, and only one major activity a day with kids.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Rome?

Bistrot 64! It was gastronomy and a bit expensive however it was the best pasta we had the entire time in Rome. For Pizza (recommended by Roberta) Emma Pizzaria this was hands down the best pizza around we LOVED it and would go back next time we are in Rome.

Everything, the Colleseum, Spanish Steps, Wedding Cake St. Peter's Basilica, climbing the dome at St. Peter's, the Crypts, Trevi Fountain, the Vatican (tons of walking) and just exploring the streets of Rome.

Carlo Menta in Trastevere - this is a nostalgic pick for us as this was our go-to spot when we studied abroad in college in Rome. It’s located on the Main Street on the way to Santa Maria in Trastevere, has quick service, delicious pasta, and is affordable. What’s not to love?!

Email a few months in advance to book a tour of St. Peter’s tomb. You’ll get to see the excavation of an early pagan graveyard with mausoleums underneath St. Peter’s basilica and skip the line for the basilica. Google “Scavi tour” to find out more. You also can’t kiss the Villa Borgese - the sculptures are incredibly impressive.

Trattoria da Teo, the food was amazing and the waiter was pretty funny. He kind of just told us what we were going to eat and drink, and he was right about all of it!

We did a mosaic making class at with a local artist at Associazione Culturale Aegea Mosaici where we used a hammer and chisel to split the marble just the like they did back in the day. It was a great way to feel connected to the culture and history.

Our very favorite thing we did in Rome was renting a vintage Fiat Spider Pininfarina car and driving it up into the Alban Hills. It was literally a scene from a movie and I will remember the smile on my husband's face as he drove through the hills for the rest of my life.
