Deleted 31's Proposal Story in Mont-Tremblant

What is your love story?

We met in college 5 years ago and were immediately crazy about each other. I couldn't even manage to get more than a nervous grunt out anytime we passed in the hallways. We eventually started dating and have lived a ton of life together, moving across the country to Austin, then again to L.A. for her to pursue a career in animation, and then back to Austin to call it home. For me, there was never a "I know she's the one" moment necessarily, we've both taken this relationship a day at a time without worrying about what we'll be x years from now, and every day she was the one. We've just focused on loving and supporting each other which made this proposal even more of a shock and surprise after 5 and a half years.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Since we moved away from the pacific northwest and have had constant summer for the past 3 years, Kim was dying for some snow, cold, and Christmas. We also didn't have quite enough money for a trip to Europe for something crazy like Paris. Montreal was a perfect discount Paris :P And the village in the mountains was a perfect fit for getting the full Christmas vibes.

What is your proposal story?

The proposal was like a heist movie for me. We both work from home and live together, so sneaking around and planning things was a huge challenge. I made time to see the ring in person on Melrose when we were still living in L.A., 3 months before the proposal. Since then I've had to intercept packages, distract her, book Flytographer in secret (sorry for the delayed emails!), etc. The day of, I had a big obvious bump in my coat where the ring was hidden and had to work for an hour to keep her distracted. We walked around Mont Tremblant, but I had mistimed our walk, apparently we're really fast. We had already walked by the chapel where there was supposed to be an ice skating rink, made our way back into town, and I suggested, "We should go back and look for the ice skating rink. Maybe we missed it." ... We very obviously didn't miss it. There was a big empty field where it should have been. She started getting more suspicious and I only had to hold things together for about 15 more minutes. When we got back to the incredibly empty ice-skating-rink-less field, I suggested that we walk across it anyway... I can't believe I got away with this. I approached Allen, our photographer, and asked if he knew about an ice skating rink in the area. He completely played the part and said there should have been, but it's too warm right now. Nothing noteworthy. At this point I nearly blacked out, adrenaline was too high. I walked a few steps away, hoped I was positioned well -- I'd been taking not from further away paying attention to where Allen was shooting -- then I proposed! Kim was completely shocked and didn't even respond for about half a minute. She was tearing up, and she was even more shocked when she saw we had a photographer. We got to spend the rest of our time in the mountains, relaxing at Hotel Quintessence, and it all played out perfectly. I couldn't have changed a single detail to make it better.
