Travel Story

Charlotte and I started our day the way we wish we could start every day, in a salon, getting our hair and make-up done. We were Blow(n) away by our morning makeover in Covent Garden at a boutique salon that transforms you into a “photo-ready beauty” in 60 minutes. We walked out of Blow looking and feeling beautiful, and met our Flytographer photographer, Hector, just a few short blocks from our salon for our first ever, “Mother/Daughter” photoshoot. Let me just pause to give you a bit of background on my love affair with this Victoria owned business. I started crushing Flytographer years ago when they won Douglas Magazine’s “Top Ten To Watch.” The idea is brilliant – hire a professional vacation photographer to capture your trip. In September, when Del and I were in Italy for my 50th birthday, we thought it would be fun do a Flytographer photoshoot in Florence. That hour we spent with Alberto, was magical. He had us kissing, dancing and laughing, it was not only fun, but romantic! So, when I knew I was coming to London to visit Charlotte, I thought it would be amazing to have an experience like this with my only daughter, and it was. Hector had us laughing, smiling, and holding hands in all of these iconic locations in the Covent Garden area of London. My favourite moment was when I said to Charlotte, “Let’s skip!” And she started doing this weird thing with her hips, and I said, “What are you doing?” And she looked at me with that “what do you mean what am I doing” look, and said, “You said let’s strip, so I am pretending to, you know, to strip.” I burst out laughing, “I said skip, not strip.” We both almost collapsed on the street in hysterics. I have spent most of my adult life in front of the camera, but honestly, I don’t like getting my picture taken. I enjoy looking at the images even less. I always think I look too fat, too old, too blah blah. But there is something about this experience that was more about Char and I, and less about the camera. It was if we were given permission to just be playful and silly, and we both felt so present during the whole thing. I want to add, that I paid for my Flytographer shoot (both of them), so I am not sharing this for any other reason than to simply communicate what a great experience this was for me -- because I know for a lot of woman, getting their photo taken can be very stressful.

Travel Tips

We were both on a high after the photoshoot, so we wandered through Covent Garden, enjoying all the cute little shops, while listening to the sounds of a busker which just happened to be a professional opera singer. I just can’t believe how this city fills my soul and activates all my senses. The beauty of the historic buildings, the flowers, the food, and the energy of all the people. I just feel so alive, I want to keep on skipping (not stripping) through the streets, grinning and taking it all in.We then enjoyed a long, leisurely lunch, and yes, it included a glass of Rose. There was a moment during lunch, when I looked over at this beautiful flower cart, and I said, “Charlotte, go stand by the cart, I will take a picture and send it to Julie Cove, she will love it!” As I took the photo, I had a surprised by joy moment. Here I am sitting in this courtyard, surrounded by flowers, in the warm sunshine, enjoying a delicious meal, with my beautiful daughter who is now a young woman, living in London! I am not going to lie, #blessed is the perfect way to describe this moment
