A surprisingly traffic-free commute, a fresh new haircut, fish tacos\u2014these are all things that regularly get called \u201cawesome.\u201d You want to see something truly awe-some, as in awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, eyebrow-raising, \u201cHoney, get the camera!\u201d-worthy? We have two more words for you: \u201cstorm watching.\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You could be outdoors with the wind and sea spray hitting your face, witnessing the fury and power of waves pummelling the beach, or inside an oceanfront cabin, tucked up all cozy-like by the fire as the storm rages across the skyline outside your windows\u2014this is storm watching.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes the Pacific Northwest ideal for such an activity, is that this exposed coastline isn\u2019t buffered by any landmasses, so it\u2019s nothing but roiling Pacific Ocean between here and Japan. Which equals big winds, waves and storms. As long as you\u2019ve got the right gear to keep you warm and dry (i.e. gumboots, hat, thermal base layers and fleece under <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waterproof<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pants and jackets), the West Coast will show you a whole new world of natural wonders. One of the great aspects of a place like Haida Gwaii (and all of these destinations along the West Coast), is that the Pacific Ocean moderates temps year-round, so the summers are cool and the winters are mild, not miserable. The sweet spot for storm watchers is November to January, when at least a third of the days are considered windy (40 kilometres per hour and up). It\u2019s home to many long, wind-whipped beaches because of its peninsula shape, where epic 20-foot waves are a boon to local storm watchers and surfers alike. Chesterman Beach has an almost double-exposure of wind hitting it from two different bays, so it\u2019s the most fun to walk along as the fighting wind gusts push you around. Farther south, the scenic Cox Bay is where you\u2019ll get the biggest waves (watching surfers is fun too!). <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> <!-- .et_pb_text --><\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_image et_pb_image_3\">\n<span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap \"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/flyphotoprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/15500879316_95cfa9f90b_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" height=\"auto\" width=\"auto\" class=\"wp-image-52090\"><\/span><a style=\"line-height:1.7em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/taylar\/15500879316\">(Photo: Flickr, Ingrid Taylar)<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_3  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/flyphotoprod.wpenginepowered.com\/destinations\/tofino-ucluelet\"><b>Ucluelet<\/b><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B.C., Canada<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This small coastal town (population 1,700) is around a 40-minute drive south from Tofino, but its rocky shores offer the storm watcher something totally new. Winds can get up to 70 kilometres an hour, and the area gets 10-to-15 big storms a month during November through to March. One of the best places to see storms is from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blackrockresort.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Rock Oceanfront Resort<\/a>&nbsp;(which sits on a giant rocky outcrop above churning waves) and&nbsp;on the Lighthouse Loop trail, part of Ucluelet\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildpacifictrail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wild Pacific Trail<\/a>. This hiking path is an easy walk and there are a bunch of little tree-shielded alcoves to watch the high drama below in Barkley Sound. Plus you\u2019ll get to see waves crashing around the charming old Amphitrite<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lighthouse. Ucluelet Bonus: It\u2019s less busy and accommodation is often less expensive than its more well-known island neighbour, Tofino.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> <!-- .et_pb_text --><\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_image et_pb_image_4\">\n<span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap \"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/flyphotoprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Cape_Flattery_-_panoramio_-_Gabriele_Giuseppini.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" height=\"auto\" width=\"auto\" class=\"wp-image-52092\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cape Flattery at Neah Bay, Washington, U.S. (Photo: Gabriele Giuseppini)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_4  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h4><strong>Cape Flattery<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington, U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right at the northernmost tip of the south-of-Alaska United States, is the stunning (and fabulously named) Cape Flattery. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After taking an easy wooden plank path that snakes through the rainforest to Neah Bay, you\u2019ll arrive at an ocean scape right out of <em>National Geographic<\/em>. From a wooden platform built high on the cliffs, you can see the rocky bay of aquamarine water protects a dozen or so tree-topped sea stacks, and there are holes eroded into the cliffs so deep they look like mysterious sea caves. Even the most jaded city slickers in your crew could come here and the blas\u00e9 would just fall right off \u2019em. Nature Bonus: Visitors might see bald eagles, seals or a whale or two.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> <!-- .et_pb_text --><\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_image et_pb_image_5\">\n<span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap \"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/flyphotoprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/photo-53_original-whitney-cannon-beach-portland.jpeg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" height=\"auto\" width=\"auto\" class=\"wp-image-52091\"><\/span><a style=\"line-height:1.7em\" href=\"https:\/\/flyphotoprod.wpenginepowered.com\/vacation-photographers\/your-vacation-photographer-in-portland-meet-whitney\">Cannon Beach&#8217;s uber-photogenic Haystack Rock. The beach here seems to stretch out forever, so it\u2019s perfect for long contemplative walks and beach-combing, and you never know what shipwrecks or treasures might wash up on the flat sandy shores. If you\u2019re feeling a chill, you\u2019ve got two fantastic options. One, get cozy inside one of the beachfront luxury suites (<a href=\"https:\/\/stephanieinn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephanie Inn<\/a>, we\u2019re looking at you). The 180-degree views can\u2019t get more sweeping, so the sunsets here are unreal. But your other great option is to start a fire right on the beach\u2014day or night (you can source dry firewood at your hotel or the local market). Pro Foggy Tip: If the fog is so omnipresent you can\u2019t see two feet in front of your face\u2014head to Devil\u2019s Cauldron.
