Naturally, we love to tap them for their Rome<\/a> <\/span>travel tips<\/span><\/a> and insight every chance we get, and this week we reached out to<\/span> Guido<\/span><\/a>, one of our Flytographers in<\/span> Rome<\/span><\/a>, for his best tips on what you absolutely must do when visiting Italy\u2019s Eternal City as soon as you touch down at <\/span>Fiumicino (FCO) airport<\/span>. \u2708\ufe0f<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

1. Visit the major monuments at dawn<\/b><\/h3>\n

The Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Vatican City, Colosseum, Castel Sant\u2019angelo, Piazza Navona \u2014 yes, you should see as many of these ancient Roman monuments as possible, but Guido\u2019s pro tip is to do so at dawn to beat the queues and crowds. The best time for hotspot sightseeing (and your photoshoot!) is the magical golden hour as the sun is rising and the light is soft. \u2728 You might think the monuments are closed, but press on and experience being alone at the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, and all of the other tourist attractions in the city centre \u2013\u2013 it\u2019s going to be priceless. \ud83e\udd0c\ud83c\udffd<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

2. Devote yourself to eating<\/b><\/h2>\n

Not taking advantage of Rome\u2019s food offerings would be a sacrilege, and thankfully Guido has cooked up an authentic hit list to steer you in the right direction. \ud83c\udf5d At <\/span>Trattoria Da Teo<\/span><\/a> in Trastevere you should order the squid with artichokes or pasta \u201ccacio e pepe\u201d with lime (for the squeamish anti-tentacle people), head to <\/span>Restaurant Roscioli<\/span><\/a> for what might be the best carbonara in Rome, <\/span>Felice a Testaccio<\/span><\/a> for more \u201ccacio e pepe, Mordi e Vai\u201d inside of the Testaccio Market for the best sandwiches in Rome, and finally <\/span>Flavio al Velavevodetto<\/span> in Testaccio for the can\u2019t-miss tiramisu. None of these delectable Rome travel tips should be considered before your \u201caperitivo\u201d (pre-meal drink) though. We would recommend ordering a house wine or a refreshing spritz. \ud83c\udf79<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

3. Hit the Trionfale Market<\/b><\/h2>\n

Flag down a taxi driver, or save money by purchasing bus tickets or a <\/span>Roma Pass<\/span><\/a> for trams and public transportation, and head to <\/span>Trionfale Market<\/span><\/a> (Mercato Trionfale as they say in Roma). \ud83d\ude8e This is a massive, year-round indoor market in Rome\u2019s downtown off the Via Andrea Doria with more than 270 stalls of food, fruit, cheese, meat, veggies and vino (what else do you need?). This is most definitely where the locals shop and the most authentic \u201cfood tour\u201d experience you will find in Rome. Be prepared to gesticulate while bargaining and keep at least one hand free for sampling olives and salami. \ud83e\uded2 Speaking of hands, there is no way you could come out empty-handed. \u201cWalk, get lost, and don\u2019t rush!\u201d advises Guido. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

4. Take a city tour<\/b><\/h2>\n

So much of Rome is lost on the casual observer who doesn\u2019t know the history and didn\u2019t pack comfortable shoes. \ud83d\udc5f That\u2019s why it\u2019s imperative that you take a self-guided tour, on foot, on bike or on a Vespa, and make sure your route takes you to the charming and cobbled street of Via Margutta. Guido says this is one of the streets of \u201cla dolce vita\u201d and it\u2019s where Audrey Hepburn lived in the timeless cinematic travel classic, Roman Holiday. If this is your first time to Rome, consider a tour guide so you can learn about the rich local history. If you are travelling at peak season, be wary of pickpockets and don\u2019t forget your water bottle with drinking water! Being among the sweetest of all Rome travel tips \u2013 one way to cool off from your adventure in the hot Italian sun is with a little gelato. \ud83c\udf68<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

5. Take in sunset at the Janiculum Terrace<\/b><\/h2>\n

As the second tallest hill in Rome, Janiculum Hill, or Gianicolo as it\u2019s known to the Italians, is one of the best, if not the best, places to get a dazzling view of Rome. Get there with plenty of time to see the sunset and wash the city\u2019s domes with rich, gold light. The time has come to disconnect from your phone and soak in the Italian way of life. \ud83c\udf1e<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

6. Get your cappuccino first thing<\/b><\/h2>\n

First of all, Guido says there\u2019s an awesome cafe for coffee and croissants (which Italians call cornettos) behind the Pantheon named Sant\u2019Eustachio Cafe that you should visit. \ud83e\udd50 Second, you must remember that you can only order a cappuccino in the morning, it is \u201cabsolutely forbidden\u201d (Guido is very firm on this) to order an espresso in cappuccino format after lunch. \u2615\ufe0f He didn\u2019t brief us on the social or criminal ramifications of such actions, but best to be on the safe side with these local Rome travel tips. \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
