    2. Plan to take photos at golden hour<\/b><\/h2>\n

    As with many photos, the start and end of a day \u2014 golden hour<\/a>, or the hour after the sun rises and before the sun sets \u2014 allows for soft light and avoid the harsh shadows of midday. <\/p>\n

    \u201cI always explain that it is not a good idea to shoot everything directly into the sun,\u201d Flytographer <\/span>Chema in Tenerife<\/span><\/a> says. \u201cThe light is beautiful but it\u2019s better over the skin.\u201d<\/span> \u2600\ufe0f<\/span><\/p>\n

    Sometimes, beaches are overcrowded in the evenings on the weekends in some locations. Shooting at sunrise gives you more space to move and feel comfortable, which usually translates to better photos. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Flytographer <\/span>Allie in Mystic<\/span><\/a> leans towards going later and even likes to go a tick past golden. \u201cBlue hour \u2014 the moments just after the sun has gone down \u2014 can be really dreamy and romantic! I\u2019ve always called it twilight. It\u2019s my favourite!\u201d If there is no sun and it\u2019s an overcast day, the clouds will create a diffusion effect and the end results will be amazing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    3. Try going barefoot<\/b><\/h2>\n

    The joy of wriggling toes in the sand of beach capitals like San Diego would seem to be enough, but there\u2019s real value in a) being comfortable because it means looking relaxed, and b) showing your compatibility with the setting. <\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cLeave the high heels in the hotel, bring comfortable shoes, and then for the photos take them off,\u201d says Flytographer <\/span>Fernanda in Cabo San Lucas<\/span><\/a>. \u201cYou will enjoy the experience if you go barefoot.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    There\u2019s a natural tendency to go neutral. Don\u2019t do it! <\/span><\/h2>\n

    \u201cConsider <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> wearing white or khaki. I know it\u2019s popular but it can wash you out,\u201d says Flytographer <\/span>Dawn in Galveston<\/span><\/a>. \u201cConsider bright colours like yellow, fuchsia, red, or cobalt blue to help you pop in your photos!\u201d <\/span>\ud83c\udf3a <\/span><\/p>\n

    Flytographer<\/span> Chema in Tenerife<\/span><\/a> gets more specific still: \u201cRed dress and black sand is always a good match.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    5. Bring some playful props<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Don\u2019t be afraid to be playful. As photographers \u2014 and especially family photographers \u2014 will tell you, if everybody\u2019s happy and having fun \u2026 guess what? They\u2019re going to look like they\u2019re happy and having fun. \ud83d\ude03<\/span><\/p>\n

    Flytographer <\/span>Dawn in Galveston<\/span><\/a> has a hack for that. \u201cProps are under-appreciated,\u201d she says. \u201cNothing warms up a family and keeps the kids happy, and therefore smiling, like beach balls! I think sometimes people think if they bring toys, they won\u2019t get that group photo they have their heart set on, but they will and they\u2019ll probably get more of those because they have a way to give smaller family members a break.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

    Other props to consider: Beautiful blankets or towels that aren\u2019t too busy; items of significance to, say, the graduating senior or the marrying couple; great beach chairs. <\/span>\ud83d\udc1a<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    6. <\/b>Get creative with prompts<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Movement can make for a captivating portrait, and\/or departures from clich\u00e9 engagement pictures or high school senior portraits. Possibilities include a strolling shot or even some amphibious action, albeit not completely immersed. <\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cGet in the water!\u201d says <\/span>Natalie in Honolulu<\/span><\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t mean diving in completely \u2026 but getting deeper than just toes can make for some really fun shots at the end to finish up the shoot.     Embracing nature in other ways works well too. There\u2019s nothing like a good driftwood log to bring depth, texture, and oceanic context to a photo.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
